Another of the Hamilton county settlers of 1872 has heard taps sounded, and set his foot on the long, long trail that leads from time to eternity. At the ripe age of 84 years, this old soldier and old settler is called to his reward and will receive the "well done" of the Master as well as that of fellow citizens and posterity. He was a native of Pennsylvania and in babyhood his family moved to Illinois. During his childhood he was where educational advantages were poor, but he made the best use he could of what there were. He served a year and a half with the union army in Company H of the Twenty-sixth volunteers, and was in many battles as well as in the march to the sea that divided the confederacy. He was a member of the Grand Army of the Republic, and when he passes there is but one resident member of John A Logan post. When the war was over he worked as a carpenter and farmer for two years in Illinois, when he drove team and wagon to Iowa, traded for three yoke of oxen and came on to Hamilton county in the year 1872. He traveled at the rate of fifteen miles a day, when some people now travel near four times as far in one hour. His was the first homestead entry in South Platte precinct, now one of the rich precincts of the county. He lived with his wife and baby in the covered wagon until they had time to build a small frame house, twelve by fourteen feet in dimensions, the lumber being hauled from Sutton. A well was dug, and a sod barn built. Fuel came from the Platte. Aurora had but one store and it took two days to go to mill. They endured the Easter storm of 1873 and a little later, the grasshoppers, gradually gaining in resources until comfort and east followed privation, and the conquered plains yielded a competence. Both his wife and a son died in 1916, and for some years he has been "only waiting," a faithful member of the United Brethren church and a highly respected citizen of the community to which he had rendered such service. The funeral was held at the home at 1:30 on Wednesday and at the Richland United Brethren church, at 2:00, the ceremonial in charge of Rev W Beasley, of Marquette assisted by Rev T Lauer, with Yost and Vogt superindending the burial. Interment was made in Richland cemetery. Daniel Fye, son of Conrad and Sarah Fye, was born in Cambria county, Pennsylvania, May 9, 1843. He died Sunday January 8, 1928, being 84 years, 7 months and 29 days of age. In his childhood the family removed to Stephenson county, Ill., where he grew to manhood. He enlisted in the service at the time of the Civil war and gave his full share of devotion to his country in time of need. On February 24, 1870, he was married to Louisa Fye also of Stephenson County, Ill. In 1872 they emigrated to Hamilton county, Nebr., where they took a homestead about six miles north of Aurora. Here occurred the death of his wife, February 11, 1916. His eldest son, Charles W, died on May 11 of the same year. His youngest son, Ira D of Marquette, with whom he had made his home survives him. Two brothers, Rev David Fye of Carlysle, Iowa, and J H Fye, of Pearl City, Ill., and one grandson, Corda D, of Marquette, also survive him. Hamilton County Register, January 13, 1928
