Mustered out Aug. 15, 1865, Houston, Texas. ------ The 38th Iowa was nicknamed the Martyr Regiment because more than a third of their number died of disease in Mississippi and Louisiana in the last months of 1863 shortly after the Siege of Vicksburg.
