Stratford Courier October 27, 1938 Obituary Mrs. Charley Altvater Phoebe Tempie Corbin, daughter of Daniel and Isabelle Corbin, was born in Fayette county, Iowa, Nov. 30, 1870, and died in the home of her daughter, Mrs. Julius Sonksen on Oct. 18, 1938, at the age of 67 years, 10 months, 18 days. Her early life was spent in southern Iowa. In the spring of 1908, she with her family moved to Jeffers, Minn., where they resided until the family moved to Stratford in 1924. She had lived here until her death. She was united in marriage to W.G. McMichael, June 10, 1885. To this union eight children were born. She was preceded in death by two daughters, Nettie Mae and Margaret Isabelle. On Oct. 5, 1927, she was married to Charley Altvater. She leaves to mourn her death, her husband, two sons, James McMichael of West Liberty, and George McMichael, of Mankato, Minn.; four daughters, Mrs. Bertha Sonksen, of Stratford, Mrs. Stella Witt, of Beresford, S. Dak., Mrs. Elizabeth Dahms, of Rock Rapids, Mrs. Bessie Rose, of Stratford. Two brothers and three sisters also survive: Luther and Walter Corbin, who reside in Minnesota, Mrs. Peter Goss, of Mitchell, S. Dak., Mrs. Dora Twinning, Spooner, Wis., Miss Clara Corbin, of Redfield, S. Dak. There are twenty-two grandchildren, eight great grandchildren, many nieces and nephews, other relatives and a host of friends in every community where she had lived. She was a member of the Methodist church, the Ladies Aid society, and the Alpha Sunday school class and was a devoted Christian. Her faith in prayer carried her over many of the depressing times in her life and recent illness. When troubles came she always turned to the Lord in prayer. She always did her part in the church and in her home and for her neighbors and friends. Their sorrows and joys were hers. In her earlier life she filled the role of "mother" to many who knew her. She was always a kind and patient mother, always loving and providing for her children. During her last illness she was always patient, never complaining but fighting for life, until two days before she passed away. She was prepared to go on and before her death she glimpsed the beautiful eternity to which she has gone. Whose love can equal the love of a mother; Whose the devotion so loyal and true! Who suffers so much with joy for another, Who works with such pleasure as mother for you! You hail with delight the friendships of others, Yet, where do you find a friendship like Mothers, Unbroken till death calls, A life's work is done. - Contributed Funeral services were held Friday afternoon with a family service in the Sonksen home at 2 o'clock which was followed with a service in the Methodist church at 2:30 o'clock. Both were in charge of the Rev. Paul R. Johnson. Following the services the remains were interred in the South Marion cemetery. The casket bearers were Elmer Peterson, Sam Lundell, Ben Lundquist, F.T. Ferlen, John Garvin, Olof O. Westrum.
