Description	:	Daniel Jackson was born in Nelsonville, Wisconsin, April 10, 1873, to Nels and Agnetta Balstad. His father was an early day carpenter who built without using nails, but wooden pegs. Read More	Daniel Jackson was born in Nelsonville, Wisconsin, April 10, 1873, to Nels and Agnetta Balstad. His father was an early day carpenter who built without using nails, but wooden pegs. Dan learned the fundamentals of carpentry from him. His father died when Dan was only fourteen years old, so he became the main support of his mother and five [may be six?] younger brothers and sisters. He worked for a time in a flour mill and then became a woodsman. In his mid-twenties he went west, first to a sheep-farm near Watertown, South Dakota, and later to the west coast. Returning to Montana, he heard of the land for homesteading in the area south of Minot, North Dakota, so he came to the Blue Hill area in August, 1902, and took a homestead, (one of the very few remaining) in Blue Hill township. On October 25/28, 1906, he married Anna Gudahl who had been born in Nordfjord, Styrn, Norway, October 28. Anna came from Norway to Blue Earth, Minnesota, with her family at age 8. They lived there for two years. After the death of her mother they moved to Howard, South Dakota where the father bought a preemption. They experienced reverses in dry years and the members of the family had to learn early to depend on themselves. Being anxious to gain an education Anna attended what was then known as General Beadle College (now Dakota State) in Madison, South Dakota. Later she attended Pillsbury Academy at Owatonna, Minnesota. During the "Cleveland Times" she lived in St. Paul, Minnesota, where she learned to sew, working at fine sewing such as men's bosom shirts, men's suits and even furs. This developed into custom sewing for a wealthy clientele, including Mrs. Devine, wife of the governor of North Dakota. After several years of caring for the small children of a widowed brother, she came to North Dakota where she was one of the six first land-seekers and homesteaders in Blue Hill township. Others of that group included Alfred Mathieson, Bob Mellom, and John Unseth. All homesteaders were required to build (or have built) a shack on his claim, and to spend from one day to the next on it once every six months. It was in order to fulfill this requirement that she came out on the stage, owned by E. E. Freedeen, and driven by Dan Jackson that she met her future husband. It was in this experience she might have lost her life, as a hot stove pipe set fire to the roof of the shanty in a blizzard. She was able to put out the fire, but was without heat. Luckily a neighbor knew she was there, and came over to bring more fuel. There was nothing else to do but follow him home until the blizzard was over the next day. Since their homesteads were across the road from one another they met occasionally after that. After their marriage they established a good home. They had no children but Myrtle Mathieson grew up as their foster daughter, and since she was teaching when the hard years struck, was able to help them financially. A monument to them is a landmark in a beautiful stone house which Anna planned and the construction of which he supervised. This caused him to become known throughout the area as "Stonewall Jackson." Fate decreed that Dan should become a helpless cripple with arthritis the last years of his life. But the many nighbors and friends he had made during many years of service to the community on the town board, school board, and such, paid off in frequent visits, gifts, and programs. he was always found cheerful and optimistic, in spite of severe pain. Anna was his faithful nurse till the last. She survived him by five years. They are at rest in Rose Hill Cemetery in their much loved Minot. The former Myrtle Mathieson now Mrs. Matt Thue of Howard, South Dakota, still owns the farm which she redeemed when they lost it, that they might spend their last years there as they wished to do. It is not known why or when Daniel took the surname of Jackson, but he and his family show up on the 1880 US census living in Amherst, Portage, Wisconsin. Listed under the surname of Jacobson is the following: Nels Jacobson, age 33, born Wisconsin (parents born Norway), carpenter; Agnette Jacobson, age 32, born Norway; Daniel M. (son) Jacobson, age 7, born Wisconsin Anne C. (daughter) Jacobson, age 5, born Wisconsin Hilda A. (daughter) Jacobson, age 3, born Wisconsin Dan Jackson, Homesteader Of McLean Dies, 75 R Y D E R - Funeral services have been tentatively set for Saturday for Dan Jackson, early homesteader in McLean County. Mr. Jackson died Tuesday afternoon after being ill for several years. He homesteaded in McLean County in 1902, having been born at Nelsonville, Wis. The Heinle funeral home of Garrison has charge of arrangements. Survivors include his wife; a foster daughter, Mrs. Math Touhey [?], Ryder; two brothers, Carl of Nelsonville and Jacob of Howard, S.D. and two sisters Mrs. Nora Gralow, St. Paul, and Mrs. Anna Bergquist, Minneapolis. [Note: Another of Daniel's siblings may be Hilda Olson findagrave #95123964 buried Nelsonville Lutheran Cemetery she married John Olson.]
