Lanning was born near Marengo, Iowa March 22, 1863, and has spent almost his entire life in Iowa County, June 12, 1883, he was married to Lily Rose of Toledo, Iowa who died during the following year, leaving one son, Ross Howard, who six months later followed his mother to the better world. On May 20, 1896 he married Fanny McBride, of Victor, and established his home here. To this union six children were born: James, the oldest, preceded his father 19 years ago; Homer, Ruth, Naomi, Esther and Daniel are left, with the mother to mourn the loss of a loving father and husband. At the age of 12 years Mr. Lanning was converted and became a member of the Christian church, later transferring his membership to the M. E. Church of this place, where he remained a faithful member and worker, always being ready to assist in any way he was called upon, especially with the work of the choir, everyone enjoyed his splendid, strong voice. He was a member of Sharon lodge, No. 287, of Victor and the Victor chapter O.E.S. Dan was a very energetic and influential citizen of the community, having served in almost every official position in the town, and he was loved and honored by all his fellow citizens. He was a hardworking, conscientous man, always happy when busy, and when his health began to fail, early last spring he kept up his work as long as he was able, often overtaning his strength. He received the best medical skill, it was possible to have at home, at Iowa City and at Rochester, Minn., but the dread disease had gone too far and after several weeks of intense suffering, patiently cared for by his loved ones, he passed to the world beyond, Tuesday evening, Feb. 8, at 9:00 o'clock at the age of 57 years, 10 months and 16 days. Besides his own immediate family, he leaves two sisters, Mrs. Bertha Roberdee of Davenport; Mrs. Arda Border, of Bertram, Iowa; and a brother, James Lanning, of Fairplay, Mo., who could not be present on account of his own illness; also a number of more distant relatives and a host of friends, who will miss him greatly. The funeral services were held Thursday p.m. at 2:00 o'clock at the M. E. Church, which was filled to its capacity with relatives and friends, all business being suspended and school dismissed. Rev Hawk and Rev. Nagel conducted a very impressive service dwelling very much on the high esteem in which Mr. Lanning was held in the community. The body was then taken to the beautiful I.O.O.F. cemetery, where after Rev. Father Frencken had given a beautiful eulogy on him as a friend, it was tenderly laid in its last resting place.
