Seaber, an old and very highly respected citizen of this community died at his home in Westernport Monday of this week April 2, 1900, after a short illness of about eight days only, caused by pneumonia, aged 77 years, 10 months, 19 days. Mr Seaber was born at Hanover, Lancaster county, Pa. His parents were of good old German stock, their ancestors having come to the country from Wurtenberg during our Revolutinary war, settling at the time in eastern Pa. Early in life, the parents of Mr Seaber moved across the line into Maryland, taking up their residence near Hagerstown and vicinity Washington county. The deceased himself came to Allegany county in 1856, stopping for awhile near Cumberland, but locating permanently at Westernport in 1863, where he followed an active life, known to almost everyone. For a long time after locating here he was in the emply of the B&O railroad, engaged in the shops here as a carpenter. For quite a number of years past, he has been the sexton of Philos cemetery. Mr Seaber was twice married. His first wife being a Miss Elizabeth Sponseller of Clear Spring, Maryland, the second a Miss Martha Pickett of Westernport. There were no children of the second union. There were six of the first marriage: Mr John F. Seaber of Westernport, Mr Charles Seaber of Cumberland and daughter Laura, also of Cumberland, being the surviving ones. Besides the wife and children mentioned, there are 12 grandchildren living. The deceased was a member of the Lutheran church. He was one of the promoters and organizers of the Lutheran congregation in this community, and was the first superintendent of its Sunday school. Mr Seaber was perhaps the oldest Oddfellow in Western Maryland. he had been a member of the order for 55 years, joining first Mr Moriah Lodge No. 32 at Clear Spring. After coming to Westernport, he transferred his membership to Philos Lodge. He was Past Grand Marshall of that lodge. The funeral took place Wednesday and was in charge of Philos Lodge and the ceremonies conducted at the Lutheran church.
