Seaber Expires After Brief Illness Established Record for Long and Faithful Service to Church and Lodge John F. Seaber, aged 82 years, respected resident of this community for nearly seventy years, passed away Saturday night at his home on Walnut Street, Westernport. Up until last Wednesday night, when he suffered a stroke of apoplexy, he was remarkably active in mind and body for one of his advanced years. Born December 20, 1849, at Clear Springs, Washington County, Md., Mr. Seaber came to Piedmont in 1863 at the age of fourteen years. He entered the employ of the E. J. Fredlock Manufacturing Company as an apprentice carpenter and continued in the service of that company until they discontinued their contracting and building business about eight years ago. Throughout his residence here, he was a regular attendant and tireless worker in the First M. E. Church. He was a member of the official board fifty odd years, and a teacher in the Sunday School from 1878 to the time of his death. For over sixteen years he served as superintendent of the Sunday School and was honored by his election as superintendent emeritus following his retirement. In 1872 he joined Philos Lodge No, 91, I. O. O. F., of Westernport, and in 1883 became secretary of the Lodge, which position he held for 47 years. February 6, 1875, Mr. Seaber was married to Miss Mary Olive Payne at the home of her uncle and aunt, Mr. and Mrs. W. D. Hardy, here in Piedmont. Next February they would have reached their sixtieth wedding anniversary. Besides his widow, Mr. Seaber leaves three sons, Frederick W. Seaber, of Baltimore, and Harry and Will H. Seaber, of Westernport. Funeral services were conducted at the First M. E. Church Tuesday afternoon by Rev. A. T. Perkins, the pastor. Dr. W. W. Davis, of Baltimore, former pastor, delivered a eulogy of the deceased, commending him as a living example of Christian fidelity and service. Rev. C. H. Welch and Rev. J. H. Mashburn assisted in the service. ‘I Would Not Live Always,’ ‘In the Sweet Bye and Bye,’ and ‘Living for Jesus’ were sung by the choir. At the grave in Philos Cemetery Philos Lodge of Odd Fellows conducted their burial service. Pallbearers were: Luther Wright, Ray Wilt, John F. Rose, G. W. Berisford, Charles Dayton and Harry Biggs, all members of both Philos Lodge of Odd Fellows and Lafayette Lodge, K. of P. Flowerbearers were: John Martin, Forrest Dayton, Lee Frankland, Harry Batie, William H. Parr, William Wilkinson, Charles Tonry, I. K. Skidmore, John Dunk, O. E. Fazenbaker and A. N. Huth. Out-of-town people here to attend the funeral service were: Dr. and Mrs. W. W. Hardy and Mr. and Mrs. J. Webb Davis, of Grafton; Mrs. Alexander Forman, Dr. A. H. Forman, Morgantown; Mr. and Mrs. W. W. Long, Mrs. Joseph Schoppert, Keyser; Joseph Kuhnle, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Seaber, Baltimore. “The Herald” (Piedmont, W.Va.), Thursday 19 July 1934: Funeral services for Mrs. Louisa (Tonry) Seaber, aged 62 years, wife of Fred. W. Seaber, of Baltimore, were held Monday afternoon at the home of her sister, Mrs. Frank Jamesson, Westernport where she died last Friday afternoon after a several weeks’ illness. Rev. A. T. Perkins, pastor of the First M. E. Church, officiated assisted by Rev. R. J. Harkins, rector of St. James Episcopal Church. Interment was in Philos Cemetery. The pallbearers were: Norris Bruce, John Barnard, A. L. Wheeler, Edward Fazenbaker, C. W. Greitzner and Frank Smith; flowerbearers, Lee Frankland, John F. Rose, Forrest Dayton and Estel Kelley. Born in Westernport December 7, 1871, Mrs. Seaber was a daughter of the late James P. and Rebecca Tonry. She and her husband resided in the community until about eighteen years ago, when they moved to Baltimore. They were on a visit to relatives here when Mrs. Seaber was taken ill. Besides her husband, Mrs. Seaber leaves one daughter, Mrs. John Mehring, of Baltimore, two sisters, Mrs. Jamesson of Westernport, and Mrs. George M. Boyles of Piedmont, and three brothers, Charles Tonry and James T. Tonry, Westernport, and Joseph Tonry, Elkins, W.Va. Out-of-town people here for the funeral were: George Tonry, Mr. and Mrs. John Mehring and daughter, Mary Lou, of Baltimore; Robert Tonry and son, Miss Alice Tonry and Mrs. W. A. Wiedebusch, of Fairmont; Mr. and Mrs. Ira Nickodemus, of Clarksburg; J. C. Tonry and son, Albert, and daughter, Miss Ruth Tonry, of Martinsburg; Mrs. Grover Liller, Frank Young, Mrs. Willis Rickey, Mr. and Mrs. Estel Kelley, Mrs. E. Lee Fink and Mrs. Stanley Daniels, of Cumberland; Miss Alice Castle and Junior Robinson, of Keyser. “The Herald” (Piedmont, W.Va.), Friday 9 February 1923: M. E. Sunday School Honors J. F. Seaber on 50th Anniversary Events Made Occasion of Special Program Sunday Morning The Sunday School of the First M. E. Church on Sunday morning celebrated the Golden Wedding Anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. John F. Seaber with a special program which proved a delight to all present. Mr. Seaber was superintendent of the Sunday School for 16 years. He is now superintendent emeritus and also teacher of the class composed of the members of the orchestra. The primary and beginners were brought into the main room from the adjoining building. The Wesleyan Men’s Bible Class came from the auditorium up the main aisle, each one congratulating Mr. Seaber, then down the aisle and were seated in the class room with the Ladies’ Bible Class. The program included singing ‘Sunshine in my Soul;’ prayer by Mr. James Hines, of the Men’s Bible Class; scripture’, First Psalm, Rockine Tucci, medley of old hymns, led by Prof. J. C. Rhodes; ‘Blest Be The Tie,’ ‘In the Sweet Bye an Bye,’ ‘Leaning on the Everlasting Arms,’ ‘Draw Me Nearer,’ ‘Blessed Assurance,’ ‘Beulah Land,’ ‘Marching to Zion,’ ‘Happy Day,’ Faith of our Fathers.’ The greetings from the various departments were presented by Rev. Harry G. Spencer for the Church; Mr. Homer Wiseman for the Mens Bible Class, Miss Alma Burnworth for the Ladies Bible Class, Miss Mary Albright for the Main School, Master Junior Seaber for the Primary, Master Bittinger for the Beginners, Mrs H. H. Carroll for old friends. Mr. Fatkin, superintendent of the School, at the close of his address, presented Mr. Seaber with a gold piece as a tribute from the school and former members. The program was arranged and carried to a success by Supt. W. G. Tatkin and Mrs. Clarence Daddysman, superintendent of the Junior Department. Update: Jul 15, 2017.
