Death was due to a complication of diseases, following an illness of six months standing. The remains arrived at Anthon on Monday morning and services were held in the Methodist Church. Rev. F.C. Taylor of the Grace Methodist Church in Morningside, a former Anthon Methodist church pastor, had charge of the services. Burial was made in Oak Hill Cemetery. Daniel Palmer Dodd was born on August 27, 1848, in Indiana and less than two years later came to this state with his parents. The trip from Indiana was made in an ox wagon. The Dodds first settled in Iowa near Dubuque. While at this place the Civil War broke out and Daniel joined the Union forces under Grant. After being honorably discharged the Dodds moved to Clay County, locating near Spencer where he homesteaded. In 1874 he married Helen McCauley, who died in 1908. At Onawa on January 12, 1912, he was married to his second wife, Mrs. Martha Dodd. The Dodd family came to Anthon in the early days when the Lucky Valley store was in operation. When the rural route was first established in Anthon, Mr. Dodd was the first mail carrier. For fifteen years he carried mail through the snow of winter and the storms of summer. It was with great regret of the patrons and to Mr. Dodd when failing eyesight forced him to give up his much loved duties for Uncle Sam. In 1920 Mr. and Mrs. Dodd moved to Sergeant Bluff to make their home. Mr. Dodd had many sterling qualities and gladly extended the hand of friendship to everyone he came in contact with. The deceased is survived by his widow, four daughters, Mrs. J.D. Good of Sergeant Bluff, Mrs. James Trimmer of Hot Springs, Arkansas, Mrs. O. B. Chappell and Mrs. Glen Badgerow of Sioux City; two sons, W.E. Dodd of O'Neill, Nebraska, and J.A. Dodd of Quimby; one brother, Griffen Dodd of Montevideo, Minnesota; twelve grandchildren and one great grandchild.
