Hockert was born at Benton, Elkhart Co., Ind., Sept. 4, 1837, died at Davis City, Iowa, April 21, 1900, aged 62 years, 7 months and 17 days. He was married to Hulda McNutt, June 20, '61, at Benton, Ind. Shortly after his marriage he removed with his companion to Wisconsin, where he resided about 18 years. With his family, he came to reside in David City in the year '86. His wife died about five years ago and just six weeks prior to his death, he buried his only son, Ed. Hockert. His death was from blood poisoning occasioned by a splinter being run into his hand. He was sick only about four days. He leaves two daughters, two brothers and two sisters to mourn his departure. His funeral was from the L.D.S. Chapel, Sunday at 3 p.m., under the auspices of the Masonic fraternity, sermon being preached by Eld. Fred E. Blair, of Lamoni. The large concourse of people that attended the funeral obsequies showed the high esteem in which he was held. He had never allied himself with any religious organization, though he acknowledged his faith God and the Christ. The honesty and uprightness of his daily life was worthy of imitation. The sympathy of the entire community is with his daughters and especially to the doubly afflicted one who was care taker of the home of her father and lately deceased brother, by whose deaths she is left alone. "May He the 'father to the fatherless' be and abide with her in this, her hour of dark distress" is the heartfelt prayer of everyone. Obituary taken from, "The Davis City Advance," Davis City, Iowa, Thursday, April 24, 1900: Daniel T. Hockert was born in Benton township, Elkhart County, Ind., Sept. 4, 1837. He was married to Huldah McNutt June 20, 1861, at the same place, but in a few years they moved to Wisconsin where they resided until he move to Davis City in 1886. To this union were born three children, two girls and one boy. His wife died a few years ago and six weeks ago, his only son, Eddie, died. Mr. Hockert died Saturday, April 20, 1900, aged 62 years, 7 months and 16 days. His illness was not of a week's duration and his death was caused by blood poisoning. All was done for him that medical skill and loving care could do, but he had lived his alloted years and the Lord called him home to Him. While Mr. Hockert had never joined himself to any church, he was known as a God-fearing man, loving his fellowmen, and following the golden rule through all acts of his life, and as his soul comes to be judged by God, who is just and merciful, he will not be cast aside, for "by their fruits ye shall know them." His daughters, Mrs. Frank La Point and Miss Rosa, two brothers and two sisters survive him. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge, which organization took charge of the funeral services Sunday afternoon. Elder Fred Blair preached the funeral sermon at the Saints Church Sunday afternoon and he was laid to rest in the David City Cemetery.
