Smith was born in Michigan, Dec. 14, 1842, died at Hope, Kansas, September 19, 1917, aged 74 years, 9 months and 5 days. He joined the Co. A., 1st Indiana heavy artillery on the second call for volunteers and served four years. He tried to enlist on the first call for men but was refused. He came to Kansas with the early settlers and settled northwest of Hope in 1871, on the farm he still owned at the time of his death.After coming to Kansas he married a sister of Mrs. Charles Ryan, and to this union one child was born. It lies with its mother in the Pilgrim's Home cemetery, the mother passing to the other shore in Sept. 1888.He later married Miss Jennie Martin, who, besides two brothers and three sisters are left to mourn the loss of a kind and loving husband and brother. The brothers and sisters are Martin and Robert of Oklahoma, Mrs. Lucy Pratt of northwest of Hope, Mrs. Chrisman of Abilene and Mrs. DeWolf of California.He lived on his farm until a few years ago when he purchased a nice home in Hope and moved here. He was a very sociable old gentlemen and we believe he enjoyed living in this community He became a Christian in early life and was most devoted to the cause. He was a great student of the Bible and knew it almost by heart, and he greatly enjoyed arguing biblical point. His many friends called him "Uncle Dan," and as the days roll by and they do not meet him they will miss him more and more. The burial was made in the Hope cemetery last Friday, services being held in the Presbyterian church with Rev. McLain in charge. The Dispatch joins in mourning the loss of a kind and considerate neighbor and friend.
