IMMIGRATED TO AMERICA--- 1872 at age 18 to avoid the draft into the military service. He was a sheepherder in Germany. Sailed to New Orleans and then up the Mississippi River on a steamboat, landing in Perry County, Missouri. This area of the Midwest had rapidly filled with fellow Lutherans & Germans over the past 33 years.  FIRST KNOWN JOB- Was at Delassers store at Red Rock, called Star Landing. Later the river changed courses, creating a new channel. He lost his job since groceries & produce could no longer be delivered to Red Rock Star Landing. He then moved down river and purchased 5 acres from Louie Holshen and opened a store and called it his Star Landing. The rest of his days were spent in this location. Trains and boats both stopped at the Landing and he sold drygoods, groceries, cider, and probably some moonshine whiskey.  MARRIED- Mary Leimbauch on September 27, 1883, at Justice of Peace. She lived up the hollar from Dan's store. Mary Born October 14, 1864, Died November 11,1936. Five children were born to Dan & Mary at Star Landing and they were raised on the store income and income from farming on Amchler Island. The boys all went to work on the river with Charley retiring from the river years later. Mary became paralyzed from a stroke in her later years and died in 1936.  STORE AND HOMESTEAD AT STAR LANDING- The store building was on the river side of the tracks and the house on the other side. The store was kept open until Dan died and then Mercantile store bought out the entire stock. Buttons & sugar were the most valuable items, as they were being rationed at the time due to WWII. Dan also had chickens, a few cattle and always some sheep on the small homestead. The sheep probably reminded him of his beginnings in Germany. When an cow had triplets, which was unusual, he would give Mildred one of them, to raise on a bottle. It would become so tame it would follow her everywhere, down the hill to get the mail. She had to be careful that it would not follow her to school.  1922 AN EVENTFUL YEAR February Claus & Oscar were on Amschler Island tending the cattle when they seen a large cloud of smoke. Their house was burning. The same year the river was extremely high and under mined the store and almost destroyed it, Dan & the boys tore down the store piece by piece and rebuilt it on the other side of the tracks and it then was the store and their house. A large train wreck also occurred that year near Star Landing and a train robbery occurred Oct. 1922 down the tracks towards Wittenburg. Agents were waiting in ambush, Jack Kennedy (he joined Jesse James Gang at the age of 17) and Robert Ford were killed and the third accomplice turn out to be a Federal Marshall.
