Description	:	Darlene B. Waters, 79, died at home February 16, 2012, with her family at her side. She was born to the late George and Estelle Bell on July 12, 1932 in Norfolk, VA. Darlene graduated from Maury High School in 1950 and earned a BS in Social Science from the College of William and Mary in 1954, and was inducted in the Old Guard in 2004. She was born to the late George and Estelle Bell on July 12, 1932 in Norfolk, VA. Darlene graduated from Maury High School in 1950 and earned a BS in Social Science from the College of William and Mary in 1954, and was inducted in the Old Guard in 2004. She married Marshall Waters on August 20, 1955, and they settled in Norfolk, VA. Darlene was a passionate educator, beginning her career at Lakewood Elementary teaching third grade. After taking time off to raise her twin daughters, she returned to the classroom at the Madison Career Center. There she specialized in reading and language arts, and was instrumental in teaching countless adults to read. She retired in 1998 after 42 years in education. She was an active member of Freemason Street Baptist Church where she served as a deacon, was a member of the Eastern Star, and an active member of the Khedive Temple Yacht Club. Darlene traveled extensively with her family and friends, to places as diverse as Spain, Switzerland, the Caribbean, Mexico and Austria. She loved to entertain, and dinners at her home were cherished by those close to her. Darlene is survived by her husband, Marshall; daughters, Sarah, Ellen and Kathleen (aka Bunny); Ellen's husband Chuck Boyd; her granddaughter, Catherine; and Kathleen's husband Mark McCoy. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the American Cancer Society. Visitation will be at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home on Tidewater Drive from 3 to 5 p.m. on February 19, 2012. A church service will be held at Freemason Street Baptist Church February 20, 2012 at 11 a.m. There will be a reception afterwards. A graveside service will be held for her immediate family on Gwynn's Island at a later date.
