Henderson Darlene Matie Henderson, 66, of Dunedin, FL and formerly of Anamosa and Wyoming, died peacefully in her sleep on August 16, 2003, of existing medical conditions. She was born on Aug. 31,1936, at Anamosa, the daughter of Ben and Helen First Bahnsen. Darlene grew up in Wyoming, as a small town girl who loved music and graduated from Wyoming High School in 1953. After graduation, she attended the University of Iowa for a short time. Darlene then began work at National Oats in Cedar Rapids where she met John A. Henderson. On March 18, 1957, they married at Iowa City. The couple raised their family in Jones County. Darlene was employed at the Iowa State Men's Reformatory at Anamosa, where she worked in the office and gave GED classes to the inmates. Later Darlene worked as an office manager for Hawkeye Area Community Action Program in Cedar Rapids while attending Mount Mercy College. In 1981, she graduated with a degree in Business. In 1983, she and John moved to Minneapolis, MN, to be close to their four children. Darlene spent 14 years in property management in Iowa City and Minneapolis. John died of cancer in 1994. Darlene moved to Florida and on September 3, 1996 she married Irving M. "Max" Neiger, at Dunedin, FL where the couple lived until her death. Darlene is a member of the Christ Church of Palm Harbor, FL and the Wyoming American Legion Auxiliary Unit #259 at Wyoming. She had been a member of the First Congregational Church of Christ in Anamosa. Darlene was a great mother, a very giving and intelligent woman who loved to read books. She also loved music and enjoyed singing in the church choir. She is survived by her husband Max Neiger of Dunedin, two daughters, Wendy (David) Johnson of Everett, WA and Jody Henderson of Golden, CO; two sons, John Jr (Kristine) Henderson of Bloomington, MN and Eric (Christine) Henderson of Dunedin, FL; one granddaughter Amanda Henderson of Dunedin, FL; one sister Phyllis (Clarence) Brown of Wyoming; one brother, Eugene (Joyce) Bahnsen of Cedar Rapids; three stepsons, Mark (Lynn) Neiger,Bruce Neiger, and James (Lily) Neiger; one stepdaughter Laurie (Stanley) Bartilson; eight step-grandchildren and four stepgreat- grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents and first husband. Funeral services were held at 11:00 Friday morning, August 22, at the First Congregational Church of Christ in Anamosa, with burial in Mills Cemetery at Central City. Pastor Billy Duay officiated. Casket bearers were John Henderson Jr., Eric Henderson, James Neiger, Mark Neiger, Bruce Neiger, Ronald Brown and Arnold St. John. Hayden Funeral Home at Wyoming was in charge of arrangements.
