Darrell Eugene "Barney" Barnett was born Oct. 12, 1931, in Little Sioux, Iowa, the son of Amos and Helen (McAdon) Barnett. He was raised in the Little Sioux area, where he attended a country school. The family moved to the Castana, Iowa, area before moving near Ute, where he attended school. He graduated from Ute High School with the class of 1950. He then worked for the Corps of Engineers in Onawa, Iowa. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith on April 19, 1951, at Onawa Lutheran Church. On Sept. 4, 1952, he was united in marriage to Gloria Hennings in Ute. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy during the Korean conflict and served on the destroyer the USS Rowan D.D. 782 from 1952 to 1956. Upon his honorable discharge on Feb. 5, 1956, he returned to Iowa and began his farming operation near Ute. In the late 1960s, he started Barnett Machinery Consignment Auction on his home place. He graduated from auctioneer school, had a salesman real estate license, a car dealer's license to sell used cars and held a private pilot's license. In the early 1970s, when the business outgrew its first location, he moved the business to its new location in Ute. He operated the business until Parkinson's disease hastened his retirement in 2002. The couple lived on an acreage near Soldier, Iowa, for about 20 years. Due to his health, they moved into Ute. Reading was a passion for him. Reading at least three full papers every day and the Reader's Digest from end to end. He also enjoyed watching news programs. He was a true people person and loved his life's work of buying and selling. He got particular pleasure from spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Those left to cherish their memories of Barney include his bride of 56 years, Gloria; a daughter and her husband, Jane and Mike Ohlmeier of Ricketts, Iowa; a daughter-in-law, C.J. Barnett of Charter Oak, Iowa; four grandchildren, Matt Sorensen and his wife, Deanna of Soldier, Sierra Sorensen of Clarinda, Iowa, Shane Sorensen and Kade Ohlmeier at home in Ricketts; two stepgrandchildren, Shawn Ohlmeier and his wife, Mindi of Mapleton, Iowa, and Pat Ohlmeier of Ute; three great-grandchildren, Thomas, Emily and William Sorensen of Soldier; three great-stepgrandchildren, Tyler, Trista and Taya Ohlmeier of Mapleton; a brother, Kent Barnett of Soldier; three sisters, Aretha Stevens of Mondamin, Iowa, Sharon Melby of Mapleton and Karen Barnett of Tallahassee, Fla.; and numerous other relatives, neighbors and friends. He was preceded in death by his father and mother, Amos and Helen Barnett; his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Harvey and Esther Hennings; and a son, Michael Barnett.
