He attended grade school in Ollie and Hamilton, Montana and High School in Hot Springs South Dakota. Darrell always enjoyed hunting, fishing and trapping, along with his brothers and father. He worked for A.A.A. (Government land surveying) and Federal Fish & Wildlife before being drafted into the Army in 1944. He fought in the European Theater of World War II with the Tough Hombre Group, a reconnaissance troupe. He was wounded in France during the Normandy Invasion and received a Purple Heart. Darrell recovered and returned to forward reconnaissance in France, Germany and other Central European battle theaters, including the “Battle of the Bulge,” until the end of the war. Darrell returned to Hot Springs in October of 1945 and worked for the Soil Conservation Service. Darrell married his wife on May 4, 1946. They moved to Custer State Park, where he worked in the saw mill until that fall when they moved to Philip. There Darrell was Game Warden. He was instrumental in obtaining land and building the city park. Darrell served as the Game Warden for South Dakota State Game Fish & Parks Dept. for Haakon, Jackson and Jones Counties for eight years. He was transferred to Sturgis in 1954 and was in charge of Meade County. In 1960 Darrell moved to Rapid City District Office and was Assistant Chief Game Warden in charge of all the West River area Game Wardens. He later was in charge of the West River Trappers. Darrell was recognized as a responsible friend of landowners and sportsmen alike. Darrell leaves his wife of 71 years, two sons,and eight grand children,three great grandchildren and a brother in law, He was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers, Stan, Frank and Fred Brady, and his sister Alice Trent.
