He is survived by his wife Carolyn, step-daughter Elizabeth (Tony) Lush, grandchildren Mitchell, Christopher & Lauren Lush, sisters Joan Weber (Francis), Marjorie Lou Phares (Gene), Dorothy Jean Eckhardt (Charles), nieces & nephews Dale (Debbie) Weber, Mary Jo (Bill) Baecker, Doug Weber, Marilyn Collier (Rick), special nephew Dennis (Sandy) Weber, Gwen Gagen, Kenny Phares, Bill Eckhardt, Margaret Overholtz & very special friend, Dr. Daniel Stufflebeam. Darrell graduated from Wane High School Trenton, Ohio in 1946. His degrees include BS in Education, Miami University, 1950, M.Ed., The Ohio State University, 1957; Ph.D. Educational Administration & Educational Evaluation, The Ohio State University, 1971. He served in the US Army during the Korean Conflict as Special Agent, Counter Intelligence Corps. Dr. Root devoted his entire life to education beginning as a math teacher at Wayne High School, Butler County, Principal Madison High School, Asst. Superintendent, Lakota High School, District superintendent, Madison School District, Adjunct Professor, Univ of Dayton & Asst. Prof. of Univ. of Dayton, Deputy Director, The OSU Evaluation Center. His publications and consulting experiences were many in his quest to better education. He received numerous awards for his work in education. He was selected to serve on The Ohio State University Alumni Society Board of the College of Education and Human Ecology. He was selected as a member of the Wall of Honor, National Center for Evaluation, Western Michigan University. He recently was honored with an Alumni Award of Distinction from the Ohio State University College of Education and Ecology for making a difference in the lves of others through education. The family will receive friends Monday August 15, 2011 from 3 PM until time of memorial services at 4 PM at the Schlientz & Moore Funeral Home, 820 Miamisburg-Centerville Rd., Centerville, Ohio with reception to follow at the Presidential Banquet Center in Kettering. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Darrell K. Root & Carolyn A. Root Scholarship Fund #646191, The Ohio State University, 1480 W. Lane Ave., Columbus, Ohio 43221.
