Read More	Garden County News (Oshkosh, Nebraska), Sep. 11, 1958, Page 1 Daryl Lee Smith Daryl Smith, 20-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Smith of Lewellen, was killed Tuesday of last week [September 2, 1958] when an airplane crashed 50 miles off Agana air base on Guam. He had first been reported missing and the air force later confirmed his death. Daryl called home Friday, August 29, to say he was alerted to leave late that night for an unknown destination, although he knew they would land for refueling in the Hawaiian islands. Saturday he called and said they had not been able to leave until 6:00 a.m. and had refueled at Travis AFB in California. He told his folks that they had started out over the ocean but had to return because of engine trouble. He told his folks then that the plane was "an old crate" and 12 men were on it in addition to the crew. Two postcards were mailed from Wake island and again Daryl pointed out what type of plane they were on. In the first he said: "Hi. Well, how is everybody? I am OK and having a ball. We left California last night about 9:00 o'clock and got here about 4:00 in the morning. From here we go to Wake island and then I don't know. Will let you know more about it when we get to Wake. Bye now, Daryl." The other he wrote after his arrival at Wake but mailed the two at the same time. He wrote: "Hi. How are you? I'm pretty good. Boy, what a Labor Day for me. We are here at Wake island and will leave for Guam in a few minutes and from there I don't know. Boy, it is sure hot here, but a beautiful island. I don't know whether this old tub will stay up with us, but if it does, I will make it. Bye now, Daryl." Tuesday Mr. and Mrs. Smith received the telegram from Cannon AFB, New Mexico. It said: "It is with deep regret that I officially inform you of the death of your son, Airman Second Class Daryl L. Smith. Airman Smith died as a result of an aircraft crash at sea fifty miles west of Agana air base on 2, September 1958. Further details will be forwarded you at the earliest possible date. Please accept my sincere sympathy in your bereavement. Col. Malcolm E. Norton, Comdr. CAFB, New Mexico." The death of Airman Smith was the third for Lewellen young men in the last three years in airplane crashes. Dewey Boggs and Paul Noetzelmann of Lewellen were killed in the crash of a commercial plane in October of 1955. They too were in the service. Daryl was 20 years old last May. He had been in the service for years and had been stationed at various bases. He was a native of Lewellen and had attended the schools of that community prior to joining the air force. Mr. and Mrs. Smith hope to get word from the air force that it will he possible to have his body brought to Lewellen for burial, since it is understood his body was one of those recovered. Until they receive definite word on the situation they will make no plans for memorial rites.
