Description	:	Irene Stella Rook, 91, of Lewellen, died Saturday evening, May 24, 2008, at the Morrill County Community Hospital in Bridgeport. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Friday, May 30, 2008, at the United Methodist Church in Lewellen with Pastor Ray Weinerman officiating. Interment will be in the Ash Hollow Cemetery near Lewellen. Visitation will be on Thursday from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Holechek Funeral Home in Oshkosh. Read More	Irene Stella Rook, 91, of Lewellen, died Saturday evening, May 24, 2008, at the Morrill County Community Hospital in Bridgeport. Irene was born on Sept. 16, 1916, to John and Louise (Belgum) Lee in the sandhills on the Charlie Avery summerange, then Braden, Neb. She attended country school Dist. 17EJ until her family left the hills. She then attended grade and high school in Lewellen. On July 23, 1934, Irene was united in marriage to William Henry "Hank" Smith in Denver. They made their home in Lewellen and to this union, two sons were born, Daryl and Warren. Irene stayed home while the boys were in school and Hank operated the Reese Store and later became known as the Smith's Food Center. In Sept. 1957, she entered Beauty College at North Platte, Neb., and graduated in Aug. 1958. Irene opened the Clip and Curl Salon. In 1965, the Smiths bought the old Farmer State Bank building for Warren to start a mechanic shop. The front part of the building was remodeled for the Clip and Curl. Due to Hank's failing health they sold the Smith's Food Center in 1970 and then started a furniture refinishing shop behind the salon. On June 22, 1977, Hank passed away after 43 years of marriage. Irene continued to reside in Lewellen. A few years later, Wayne Rook came into her life. They had been friends since childhood, and on Sept. 16, 1981, Irene and Wayne were married. They made their home in Lewellen. After visiting Irene's sister Norma in Fayetteville, Arkansas, Wayne and Irene decided to move there in 1989. She became active in the community and the Sequoyah United Methodist Church. Wayne's health failed and he passed away on Feb. 7, 1993. Irene decided to move back to Lewellen to live her last years back home. Irene loved square dancing and attended national square dancing conventions with Hank. They were members of the Playhouse Promenaders and the Boothill Swinger Square Dance Club in Ogallala. She was a past member of the Sequoyah United Methodist Church in Fayetteville, AR, and the United Methodist Church in Lewellen. Irene was a very talented person, she was an excellent cook and loved to crochet and sew. She is survived by her son, Warren "Smitty" Smith and wife Kelly of Oshkosh; grandson, Everette Smith and wife Angie of Lincoln; adopted grandson, Scott Smith and wife Jody of Oshkosh; step-granddaughter, Miranda Hatch and husband Eldon of California; great-grandchildren, Kevin Smith of Oshkosh, Joshua Smith, Mercedees Smith and Malachi Smith all of Lincoln; step great-grandson, Alexander Hatch of California; two sisters, Vera Rieck of Wyoming, MN and Norma Lamascus of Oceanside, CA, along with numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by both husbands; son, Daryl in 1958; and her parents.
