From Museum of Dufferin website: Orangeville Banner, Thursday, April 11, 1935 - Page 8 - OBITUARY - DAVID HARKNESS: David Harkness, an old resident of the Alton district, passed away in Lord Dufferin hospital on Thursday, April 4th, in his 77th year. After farming for many years on lot 23, townline, Erin and Caledon, Mr. Harkness retired and took up his residence in Alton. He was the seventh son of the late William and Sarah Harkness and was a strong Presbyterian and a supporter of the Liberal party. He always took a keen interest and an active part in the work of his church. He had been in failing health for a number of years and was seriously ill last autumn. Everything possible was done by his doctors, two trained nurses, his devoted wife and nieces, but he gradually grew worse and his illness finally culminated in a stroke, following which he was rushed to the hospital. Although suffering great pain, he patiently awaited the call of the Master whom he loved and trusted. He leaves to mourn his loss a devoted wife, formerly Miss Mary Conley, daughter of the late Archibald and Euphemia Conley, of Caledon. The funeral service was held at his late home by a former pastor, Rev. D. McKay, of London, and Rev. Hugh Shannon of Alton United Church. Interment took place in the family plot in Greenwood Cemetery, Orangeville. The funeral was largely attended by friends and present and former neighbors. The funeral sermon was very impressive, the minister speaking with feeling of the Christian character and devotion of the departed and the many years he had resided in the community. Mr. and Mrs. Harkness were married forty-seven years ago and have spent their married life in the Alton locality. Deceased was a loving and devoted husband and was respected and loved by all who knew him. There were a number of beautiful floral offerings. The pallbearers were Messrs. R. H. Carson, Russell Rawn, Joyce McConnell, Fred Rowan, Robert Rowan and Robert Bell. Among the friends from a distance were Rev. and Mrs. D. McKay, of London; Mr. and Mrs. R. H. Carson and son, Robert, Misses D. and L. Corbit, Mr. and Mrs. H. Morris and family, of Toronto; Mrs. McColl, Inglewood; Mr. and Mrs. J. Harkness, Mrs. Harkness, Mrs. McMillan and Mr. and Mrs. R. M. Bell, Erin; Mr. and Mrs. E. Harrison and Mrs. A. Conley, Orangeville; Mr. I. Scott, Grand Valley; and Mr. W. T. Rawn and family, Mono Mills.
