Rev. H. W. Bunton officiating. Mr. Wert passed away at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Lydia Griner, in this city, on Monday Jan. 15, after several months illness with dropsy. The body was taken to the former home at Villisca, Iowa, for interment. The bereaved relatives have the heartfelt sympathy of all in this community in their sorrow. The following obituary was handed in for publication: David A. Wert was born in Pribel county, Ohio on the 22nd day of February, 1834, and died at Murdo, S. Dak., on Monday January 15, 1917 at the age 83 years, 10 months and 7 days. He spent all his young life where he was born and at the age of 24 he was united in marriage to Miss Emley A. Dolan, Sept. 23, 1859; to this union four children were born, two dying in infancy and two are still living; they are George L. Wert of Westsorna, Ohio and Mrs. Mantle person of the same place. He enlisted for service in the civil war at Greenvel, Dark county, Ohio, on April 22, 1861 and served 4 months and 1 day, being discharged on August 24 of the same year. He again volunteered for three years service under E. J. Hecocks and was discharged at Washington, D.C. "His second marriage took place on Jun 10, 1875, to Miss Sarah A. Gustine; 2 children were born to them, Charles Wert of Villisca, Iowa and Mrs. Lydia Griner of Murdo. His wife preceded him in death, passing away March 31, 1886." Deceased united with the Christian church when between the ages of 30 and 35 and has always lived a faithful life. He has made his home with his youngest child, Mrs. Griner, for the last 22 years and by whom he will be greatly missed and never forgotten. He leaves to mourn his loss four children, nineteen grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. VILLISCA REVIEW -- January 17, 1917 page 1 column 3 D.A. WERT IS DEAD Chas. Wert of this city received word Monday evening that his father D.A. Wert, had died that day at the home of his daughter, Mrs. James Griner, near Murdo, South Dakota. He had been seriously ill only a short time, but had suffered for a number of years from old age complications, which finally resulted in his death. Mr. Wert was born February 22, 1834, in Preble county, Ohio, and at the time of his death was eighty-two years, eleven months and twenty-three days old. Many years ago he came to Iowa and lived for some time at Batavia, Iowa. Fourteen years ago he came to Villisca and for more than thirteen years he made this city his home. In August of last year he moved with his daughter and family to Murdo, and was there making his home at the time of his death. His Son, Chas., of this city and his daughter, Mrs. Griner, of Murdo are the only immediate relatives who survive the deceased. Mr. Wert was a soldier in the Civil War and served his time with an Indiana company in that conflict. He was a member of the local G.A.R. while a resident of this city and that body have been requested by the family to have a part in the obsequies. Mr. and Mrs. Griner are expected to arrive in Villisca today or Thursday with the body. At that time the definite arrangements for the funeral service will be announced. The body will be interred in the Villisca cemetery. Served in the Ohio 69th Ohio Inf Co. D, 12th Co. K, for the Civil War.
