Mr. Anderson died Wednesday, January 22, 2003 at his home in Douglas of natural causes. David Barry Anderson was born February 8, 1949 in Decorah, Iowa to Maynard Joseph and Marjorie Eunice (Berry) Anderson, the youngest of three children. After attending Ossian DeSales Catholic High School in Ossian, Iowa, he studied music and piano performance at the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls, Iowa. He auditioned for Julliard Sdhool of Music in New York City. As a vocal music director at Turkey Valley Community School in Jackson Junction, Iowa, he directed a variety of high school choirs and 15 musical productions between the years of 1973 and 1987. His Junction 24 vocal jazz/gospel choir received numerous awards and recognition throughout the Midwest. He was active in the Spilleville, Iowa community directing church choirs and community theater performances by the Country Road Players, and played the lead roll for "Fiddler on the Roof." He performed for amny years as a jazz pianist for The New Revue with Jim Mazziotti. Dace was known as the "Music Man" of Northeast Iowa. In the summer if 1988 Dave moved to Douglas with his family. He began the Hamilton Street vocal jazz/gospel program at Douglas High School. Within two years, Hamilton Street was nationally recognized at the Oakland Musicfest in Oakland, California. The Hamilton Street music program grew from one choir of 13 initial members to over five choirs and 180 students under his direction. In the last 11 years, the top choir, Hamilton Street "Express", has toured through a total of 11 states throughout the Midwest and Northwest United States. Each 10-day tour spanned over 2000 miles and included 10-15 performances in churches and schools around the country. "Express" has also performed at the Wyoming State Legislature on numerous occasions, and has earned awards and recognition at music festivals and competitions throughout the state and region. Dave performed as the pianist for The Dave Anderson Trio with Tracy Pfau and Terry Gunderson, directed various clinic choirs in Wyoming and Nebraska, and taught at the Yellowstone Jazz Camp for Many years. In 1997 he received the Governor's Arts award for the State of Wyoming. Known for his intense passion for music and live of teaching, Dave Anderson, the " Music Man," will be missed throughout the education community of Wyoming and Iowa. Dave loved riding his motorcycle and spending time in the outdoors with his sons. Dave is survived by his father Maynard J. Anderson and wife, Betty of Mountain Home, Arkansas; four sons, Bill Anderson and wife Tracy of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Andrew D. Anderson of the United States Air Force Academy at Colorado Springs, Colorado, Jeffrey J. Anderson of the United States Navy, San Diego, California; and Nicholas B. Anderson of Douglas, Wyoming; one brother, Larry Anderson of West Bloomfield, Michigan; and three grandchildren, Marcelle [sic], Dorothy and Charles Anderson, all of Cedar Rapids. He was preceded in death by his mother, Marjorie E. Anderson and an infant brother, Gerald J. Anderson. Serving as pallbearers were Don Sutphin, Ed Ricks, Millard Meredith, Gale Lane, Jim Morgan, Robert Zechiel, Jim Shawver and Dick Berryman. Chuck Ciorba was an honorary Pallbearer. Memorials were to the David B. Anderson Music Memorial Fund, in care of Community First National Bank, PO Box 1307, Douglas, Wyoming 82633. Converse Funeral Chapel of Douglas and Fjelstul Funeral Home of Decorah were in charge of the arrangements.
