Pettit David Pettit, who had been a resident of Greene county since the year 1873, passed away at the home of his son, Clarence, in Grundy Center, Wednesday, March 27, where he had been taken a few months ago so that his son might help care for him as he had been failing in health for some time. Mr. Pettit was accompanied by his wife who remained ever near him until death came. Mr. Pettit was a remarkable and very active man despite his years until several months ago when his health, due to old age, failed him. He was always jovial and friendly and had a pleasant smile and kindly words to all whom he met. His presence is greatly missed among both old and young in this community. Following is a brief account of his life: David Bricker Pettit, son of Andrew and Mary Pettit, was born September 5, 1845, in Columbiana county, Ohio, and passed away at the home of his son, Clarence, in Grundy Center, Wednesday, March 27 1935, at the ripe old age of 89 years 6 months and 23 days. When he was nine years old his parents came to Cedar county, Iowa, making the journey in a prairie schooner or covered wagon. With his trusty ax his father constructed their first house from the trees of the forest, using as furniture their packing boxes used on their trip. They being real pioneers endowed with a faith that gave them strength and courage to carry on. April 4, 1867, Daid Pettit was united in marriage to Mary Jane Hutchison at Lisbon, Linn county, Iowa, and in the fall of 1873 they moved to Greene county. Three years later they moved to Beaman, where they made their home until April 12, 1909, when Mrs. Pettit was called home. Three children were born to this union, a son Dalton Eddy who died July 19, 1895, Viola Eugenia Brown of Austin, Minn., and George Clarence of Grundy Center. The next generations consist of five grandchildren and seven great grandchildren; one brother, Daniel Pettit, who resides at Grand Junction. On June 13, 1913, Mr. Pettit was married to his sister-in-law, Mrs. Mary Pettit of Grand Junction, where they lived until three months ago, having left at that time for Grundy Center, where he spent his remaining days in his son's home. Mr. Pettit was a faithful member of the Methodist church and being one of Grundy county's pioneers, helped to build the first church in Beaman. He was a good husband, a devoted father and a dependable neighbor in a true sense, and a man of finest sterling character. Words cannot portray the real worth of one so splendid. A beautiful life work ended when God called him home. Funeral services were held on Friday afternoon, March 29, at two o'clock from the Methodist church in Beaman in charge of the regular pastor. Pallbearers were old friends of the immediate family. Interment took place in the Beaman cemetery.
