The Odebolt Chronicle - October 9, 1924 – It was indeed a severe shock to this community when it was known Sunday morning that David Correll, one of the prominent and highly esteemed residents of Odebolt and one who has lived here for nearly 45 years, had been suddenly stricken by the hand of death. Mr Correll has not been in good health for some time though as he has been able to be about most of the time and has been around town much as usual it was perhaps not generally known. A short time ago he had a severe attack of heart trouble but had considerably improved and had been the past week much as usual. He was down town Saturday evening after supper. Sunday morning he suffered a severe attack of coughing and his daughter, Mrs F.J. Gilbert, with whom he has made his home, arose to minister to his comfort. She started a fire as he thought it would relieve him to be up. He went down stairs and she made him comfortable in a rocker. He told her he felt as if he might sleep and she left him for a while, thinking he was better. When she returned life had gone, death having come quietly while he was sitting in the chair, evidently without a struggle or a moments warming. Funeral services were held at the home Tuesday afternoon. Interment was made by the side of his wife in the Odebolt cemetery. David Correll was born in Wayne county, Ohio near Wooster, April 6, 1853 and at his death had passed his 71st years. He was the son of Jacob and Catherine Floyd Correll, who were natives of Pennsylvania. When he was a small child the family moved to Clinton county, this state and there he passed his boyhood and grew to manhood. At Elwood, Clinton county, Sept 2, 1880 he was united in marriage with Miss Laura Isabel Davenport, who was his loved companion until death took her after but a few days illness July 13, 1913. Immediately following their marriage the young couple came to this county and located on the farm in Clinton township, which was the family home for 28 years. In 1908 Mr Correll built the home in Odebolt and moved to town. Since his wife's death his son-in-law and daughter, Mr and Mrs F.J. Gilbert have made a home there for him. Mr Correll was the youngest of a family of 8, only two of whom survive. A brother, Levi of Parsons, Kansas and a sister, Maria of Maquoketa, both are in frail health. He leaves two daughters: Mrs Esther Gilbert of Odebolt and Mrs Zula Brown of Eugene, Or and one grandchild, the son of Mrs Brown. Biographical History of Crawford, Ida, and Sac county, Iowa - David Correll, one of the prominent and well-known citizens of Sac county, was born in Wayne county, Ohio, April 6, 1853, a son of Jacob Correll, a native of Cumberland county, Pennsylvania. His father was a native also of Pennsylvania and of Dutch ancestry. The mother of our subject, nee Catherine Floyd, was born in Cumberland county, Pennsylvania, and of Irish and German ancestry. Mr. and Mrs. Correll were the parents of nine children, six now living: Daniel, who served in the Twenty-sixth Iowa Volunteer Infantry, was wounded at Arkansas Post, and lost his right arm; he now resides in Marion, this state; Samuel, a member of the Twenty-fourth Iowa Infantry, served three years, suffered the loss of a finger, and now resides at Labette, Kansas; Abraham, of Clinton county, Iowa; Levi, of Labette, Kansas; Maria, of Clinton county; and David, our subject. The father died in 1892, aged seventy-eight years. He was a farmer by occupation; politically, a Republican; and religiously, Dunkard. The mother now resides in Clinton county, Iowa. David Correll remained on the old homestead until 1881, when he came to Clinton township, Sac county, Iowa. He has cleared and improved 320 acres of land. His dwelling, 16x28 feet, with three additions, is built in the modern style of architecture, and has all other necessary farm improvement and conveniences. Mr. Correll is engaging general farming and stock-raising. In Clinton county, Iowa, in 1880, he was united in marriage with Miss Laura Davenport, a native of Indiana, educated at Mt Vernon, and was a successful teacher before marriage. Her parents were C.L. and Mary (Parnell) Davenport. Her father was a native of Sandusky county, Ohio, and now resides in Odebolt, Iowa. The mother was born in Westmoreland county, England, and died in 1888, aged fifty-five years. Mr. and Mrs. Davenport had, five children, four now living: Laura, Albert, and Lincoln residing near Odebolt; and Jessie, living in Odebolt. Mr. and Mrs. Correll have two children: Esther Mary and Zula Floyd. Mrs. Correll is a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church. Our subject takes in active interest in the Republican party. He is a young man in the prime of life, but is prominent and active in every thing for the good of his county.
