He was born September 22, 1832, in Tuscarawas County, Ohio, and came to Eddyville, Iowa, in the spring of 1854. In November, 1856, he was married to Eliza Steele, a resident of Eddyville. She was a good true Christian woman and passed away in 1891. To this union were born three children, all of them still living- John, Eli, and Mary, the wife of John Fox. At the age of fourteen years he joined the United Brethren church which was near his father's place, and at the age of sixteen he taught a young, men's class. After coming to Eddyville he joined the Baptist church, his father and grandfather also being members and his grandfather and uncle' being ministers of this denomination. In 1868 he and his family moved to a raw piece of land two and a half miles west of Cedar. There was no fence around it, no buildings and all the hardships of a pioneer life they had to endure. Yet they were happy and lived there for more than forty-eight years. He was very religious and read the Bible every evening and prayed to the great God for help to live a pure and holy life while he lived. He had a divine faith that the hereafter would be without pain or suffering and with no trouble. He was a deacon and a class leader for many years; he taught in Sunday School the greater part of his life. He was a temperate man. His great desire was never to offend anyone. His greatest aim, in life was that his children live the pure and holy life and prosper. In 1856 he went with John Brown to the Kansas border. Brown of the Harper's Ferry fame. He was a township clerk for several years and held other minor offices. The funeral was conducted Saturday, September 15th, by John F. Arnold, a brother's son, of Simpson College of Indianola, Iowa, assisted by the pastor Rev. L. L. Smith. The services were held in the M. E. church in Eddyville and the body was laid to rest beside his wife in the Eddyville cemetery. Eddyville Tribune, September 28th, 1917
