Read More	Jan 24-1918-Nevada Representative(newpaper) page 5 OBITUARY DAVID E. SUTHERLAND David Emery Sutherland was a native of Wisconsin, his birth having occurred in Monroe, June 5, 1844. His boyhood days were spent in that state and it was from there that he answered the call of his country at the the time of the Civil War when he enlisted as a volunteer Feb 13, 1864 and was a corporal in Co. K, 16th Regiment Wisconsin Infantry. His honorable discharge bears the date July 12, 1865. After the war in 1868 he came to Iowa and was married at Nevada to Ann Rebecca Cook Feb. 4 1869. These two raised a family of eight children four boys and four girls, all of whom are yet alive, and all bur one of whom are able to be present today, and he is kept away because of illness in his home in California. These sons and daughters are Frank Sutherland of Nevada,: Mrs Ida Bump of Iowa Falls, Jay Sutherland of Whittier, Calif.; Mrs Howard Kirkendall of Salem, S.D. and Charles Sutherland of Cambridge, who are twins; Bruce Sutherland of Nevada, and Mrs Blanche Smith of Cedar Falls, who are also twins; and Mrs Lulu Posegate of Shipley. With these there survives also the wife and mother, while a company of 26 grandchildren and four great grandchildren are also a part of this family. Other relatives are his brother J.W. Sutherland of Baraboo, Wis., and half sister, Mrs Ella McLean of Monroe, Wis. Mr and Mrs Sutherland for a remarkable length of time lived on the one farm south of Nevada, the period being forty-three years. At the end of that time they came to Nevada where their home has been for the past six years. It was in this home that he passed away last saturday evening, Jan 19 at about eight o'clock after a brief illness from pneumonia complicated with heart trouble, in the seventy-forth year of his life. Mr Sutherland had the reputation of bing an honorable man, straight forward and reliable in all his dealings. About 1886 he was converted and then united with the Methodist church in Nevada. He was at teh time of his death a member of the local Post of the G. A. R. Funeral services were held at the Methodist church Tuesday afternoon, Jan 22 at 2:00 o'clock in charge of Rev. R. M. Shipman. The pall bearers were from amoung the comrades of the Grand Army, which organization also had charge of the burial in Nevada cemetery.
