David Gamble VanMeter was born September 1, 1844 in Hardy County, West Virginia, where he lived till the breaking out of the Civil War when he joined the Confederate Army and fought with his side of his country through the desperate struggle, being wounded in the battle of Gettysburg. On returning from the army he moved to Piatt County, Illinois, where on September 20, 1871 he was united in marriage to Miss Margaret Palmer. In 1876 they moved to Fairfield, Nebraska where death claimed its first toll of the family, in their three and a half year old daughter Lena. In 1891, he again moved with his family to Frontier County, Nebraska, where he resided until the time of his death, which occurred October 27, 1920 while visiting at the home of his youngest daughter. His age was 76 years, 1 month and 26 days. He united with the Presbyterian Church at the age of twenty years, but on coming to Nebraska in the early days found no church of his choice in this locality so identified himself with the Congregational Church here, and lived a consistent member of the same till the time of his death. He was stricken with paralysis over a year ago and has been a great sufferer since that time. In the last few weeks, during the lulls of his intense suffering he said he was ready and willing to go, if it was God's will, and spoke of the beautiful dreams he had of traveling to that far country. He was the father of 7 children; 6 of whom with the wife still survive to mourn the loss of their kind and loving husband and father: two sons, George and Walter VanMeter of McPherson County Nebraska, and four daughters, Mrs. Mary Miller of Formosa, Kansas, Mrs. Walter Hogue of Fairfield, Nebraska, Mrs. B.E. Fahrney, of Curtis, Nebraska and Mrs. I.E. Huffman of Lena, Nebraska Dearest Father we'll sadly miss you, With your loving council good and true, But 'tis God's will and you were willing To bid this suffering life adieu; So we no consign you to his keeping Till we all begin the life anew, With hopes so bright of a joyful meeting In the land where beautiful dreams come true.
