The Jones-Garrison family were early pioneer settlers of Grayson County during the late colonial period. David Garrison's first wife was Sarah Bourne Garrison. In "Pioneer Settlers of Grayson County, Virginia" by Benjamin Floyd Nuckolls, page 155, available at The Library of Virginia, Richmond, Virginia, Nuckolls writes about the Garrison family and their settlement on the New River: “William Jones came from Eastern Virginia, and settled on New River below the mouths of Elk and Meadow creeks, at a place where there was an island in the river. A road was made through the river, crossing the island. This was named “Jones’ Ford”, and was two miles from where the town of Greenville and Grayson Old Court House was located when the county of Grayson was formed in 1792. William Jones’ daughter married Isaac Garrison. From this union there was one son, David, who married Sally Bourne, daughter of Stephen Bpurne who had also moved from near Richmond and settled on Knob Fork. Isaac Garrison had one daughter who married Benjamin Shupe. They lived on Elk Creek and have children. Elizabeth B., daughter of David Garrison and Sally Bourne, married Hastings Fulton, son of Samuel Fulton and wife, Martha Powell Jones. After the death of William Jones, Isaac Garrison and wife lived at the old homestead, and the name of the Ford was changed to “Garrison’s Ford”. Afterwards, the land passed to David Garrison, and for two generations this was known as “Garrison’s Ford”—for years the only ford on the river for crossing with wagons.” The Isaac Garrison Cemetery (aka Jones-Garrison Cemetery) is located on this property. According to the 1850 Grayson County, Virginia Personal Property Tax List, David Garrison's father, Isaac Garrison, owned 2 slaves above the age of 12: Dianah Dickerson Goins (the wife of "free colored person", Albert Goins), and their son, Andrew Goins. By 1860, the year of Isaac Garrison's death, David Garrison owned 15 slaves. They were: Dianah Dickerson Goins, and her children, Andrew, Washington, Dred, George, Martha Ann, and Alice Goins. The others were John Nelson Williams, Darcus, Isom, Ann, Caroline, Peter, and Phyllis, and one Unknown Male, born abt. 1833.1 --Christopher Walker, 04-10-2019 1.
