David Gephart Sparks, son of William A. and Martha (Lucas) sparks, was born on a homestead near Elm Creek, Nebraska, October 24, 1890 and died at the Corning Rest Home August 10, 1966, at the age of 75 years, 9 months and 17 days. . In the 1890's, Nebraska was very sparsely settled and Indians were active although Fort Kearney was only six miles away. The summer of 1894 saw the great drought and the Sparks family, with Dave, along with two other families, forming a group of eleven covered wagons, with twenty horses and twenty cows, and set out for Foster, Missouri. Rivers were forded, animals died enroute. Even after arrival there, hardships continued. The ague (chills) plagued them and after a harvest of two crops, in the fall of 1896, Dave came with his father's family to Iowa, a short time near Carl [Iowa] and then to a farm near Mt. Etna. During the next seven years, except for brief periods in Nebraska and California and the two years, he, as a young man, spent in North Dakota and Canada, Dave has lived in the Mt. Etna, [Adams County, Iowa], vicinity. . July 25, 1916, in Mt. Etna, he married Mrs. Ollie (Hickman) Johnston and two boys were born to this union: Norman and Merrill. . His step-daughter Thelma, his son Norman and his wife Ollie preceded him in death, as did ten of his parents children. Surviving him are his sister, Clara Fox of Corning; three brothers, Noah Sparks, formerly of Corning; George Sparks of Huntington Beach, Calif., Ernest Sparks of British Columbia, Canada, his step-daughter, Edna Powell of Compton, Calif.; his daughter-in-law, Nola Sparks of Springfield, Missouri; his son Merrill Sparks of Los Angeles, Calif.; grandchildren, Delores Williams, Norma O'Dell, Norene and Nolan and Nelson Sparks; five great grandchildren and many other relatives. . Dave was devoted to his family and friends and his happy and helpful disposition and lively manner, endeared him to many. He enjoyed people, he loved work and he brought a zest to life that will be missed by all who knew him. . Funeral services were held at the Mt. Etna Church of the Brethren August 15th, conducted by Rev. Gerald Rogers and assisted by Rev. John O. Wagner, Anita Coatney sang, accompanied by Katherine Kimpson. Interment was in the Mt. Etna Cemetery. Pallbearers were Walter Arnold, Lloyd Duncan, Leland Fisher, Bill Helvie, Dallas Hickman and Charlie Reynolds. . [End]. . -- -- -- -- -- . NEWSPAPER: Adams County Free Press. The contracting parties were David Sparks and Mrs. Ollie [Hickman] Johnston and Chester Fox and Miss Clara Sparks. Miss Lulu Murphy played the wedding march and Rev. W.H. Warrior performed the ceremony. The bridal party stood beneath a pretty floral arch. After the congratulations a nice wedding supper was served. Success to the newly married couples."
