Ollie May Hickman, daughter of George D. and Naomi Tuttle Hickman, was born March 22, 1882, on a farm nine and one-half miles southeast of Villisca in Taylor county, Iowa, and passed away at her home in Mt. Etna on October 16, 1963 at the age of 81 [?] years, six months and 24 days. . When she was a year old, she moved with her parents to Adams county in the Mt. Etna vicinity where she lived the rest of her life---over fifty years in the small, more than 100 year old house, that was her home at the time of her death. . On May 25, 1907 she was married to Bart J. Johnston and to this couple two daughters were born, G. Thelma, who died at the age of 15 in 1924, and R. Elda [Johnston] Powell of Compton, California. On May 18, 1911 her husband, B.J. died. . After a five [?] year widowhood, she was married to David G. Sparks on July 25, 1916, at Mt. Etna. Two boys were born to this union, Norman C. Sparks of Grovespring, Missouri; and T. Merrill Sparks of Hollywood, California. . Ollie was always a conscientiously religious person and as a nine year old girl accepted Jesus as her Saviour in the Methodist church in Mt. Etna and has since maintained membership there. Her faith in God and her interest in her home and family were her major concerns. MUSIC was another of her necessities and she loved to sing and play and to be around others who did. . In her younger years she composed verses and melodies of her own. She enjoyed traveling and meeting people. Her inner optimism and spirituality were often a source of strength to others in her family. Her memory of people and events was remarkable and accurate. She expected much from life, from others and much from herself. It follows naturally that she felt we should give our best and most gracious selves to life. . She was the last survivor of a pioneering family of 15 children, seven brothers and seven sisters. Her brothers, Albert Hickman and William Hickman, and her sisters, Mrs. Harry (Dora) Rogers, and Mrs. Henry (Bertha) Collman, have died in recent years. Surviving besides her husband, David, are her daughter, Elda and her husband, Darwin Powell; her son, Norman and his wife, Nola Sparks; and her son Merrill Sparks; five grandchildren, Delores Williams of LaMirada, Calif., Norma O'Dell of Springfield, Mo., Norene, Nolan and Nelson Sparks of Grovespring, Mo.; five great grandchildren; her faithful friend and [?], Laura Ritnour; many relatives and friends. . Funeral services were held Saturday, October 19 at 2:30 p.m. from the Methodist church in Mt. Etna with Rev. Brown Garlock and Rev. Gerald Rogers officiating. Music was by Mr. and Mrs. Gerald Rogers, Mrs. Brown Garlock and Mrs. Stanley Evans. Pallbearers were Ralph Hickman, Lloyd Duncan, Harry Grundman, Walter Arnold, Leslie Rogers and Dallas Hickman. Newspaper excerpt: "DOUBLE-WEDDING: A double wedding was solemnized on the 25th of July at the George Sparks home in Mt. Etna, [Iowa]. The contracting parties were David Sparks and Mrs. Ollie [Hickman] Johnston; and, Chester Fox and Miss Clara Sparks. Miss Lulu Murphy played the wedding march and Rev. W.H. Warrior performed the ceremony. The bridal party stood beneath a pretty floral arch. After the congratulations a nice wedding supper was served. Success to the newly married couples."
