Description	:	David Greene 1701-1757 Major-General Nathanael Greene was David Greene's first cousin 1x removed. David was the first Greene to settle in Kingstown (see details below) and was living in North Kingstown when his will was written on September 9 & 10, 1754. His will is recorded at the North Kingstown Court House (see details of will below). Based on this, it is likely he is buried in the David Greene Lot situated on land where he and his descendants lived. David Greene [1701-1757] was born in Jamestown, Newport County in the Colony of Rhode Island. He was the son of David Greene [1677-1761] and Mary (Slocum) Greene, who was a daughter of Rev. Ebenezer Slocum and Mary Thurston. He was married first on Dec. 23, 1721 to Katharine Greene of East Greenwich. She died before Nov. 4, 1724. David's second marriage was on Nov. 4, 1724 (OS - 9 mo) to Mary Knowles. She was the daughter of Henry Knowles and Mary Case. She died on May 17, 1744. Third, he was married to Hannah (Watson) Clarke, daughter of John and Hannah (Champlin) Watson. Hannah Watson's first husband was William Clarke. A copy of David's will, obtained from the North Kingstown Court House, shows the will was dated Sept. 9, 1754 with an addition on Sept. 10, 1754. The will was proved on Oct. 18, 1757. It names his wife Hannah as the former wife of William Clarke; daughter Mary Haszard and grandson David Haszard; daughter Marcy Tillinghast (not Mary, as the Greenes of Rhode Island book indicates); daughters Patience and Weight Green; son David Green. (names are as they are spelled in the will). Other names in the document include three slaves: Newport, Robin (male) and Leidya; and witnesses: Francis Willet, Caleb Allen, Benjamin Allen; _____Sprague, John Grinnold. (Note: The Greenes of Rhode Island book does not mention daughter Mary Haszard even though she is in the will.) Before May 7, 1712, David Greene's father [1677-1761], of Jamestown, purchased 235 acres of land (North Kingstown, Kings Co (now Washington Co), Rhode Island near Plum Point Rd. in Saunderstown). This land remained in the David Greene family for over 176 years. A descendant in this line wrote on July 25, 1880: "The first Greene in Kingstown settled on land where Oliver Greene now lives. His name was David [1701-1757], and he had a son David [1728-1789/90], a lame man, who had David [1760-1834] and another son, name not known [Jonathon]. David [1760-1834] married Sarah Allen, daughter of Jeffray, a Revolutionary Soldier." (Clarke, Louise Brownell; Greene, George Sears. Oct 10, 1757; mentioned in David's will as daughter Mary Haszard. She was mother of David Haszard; she might have married Caleb Haszard. -David Greene b. Aug. 28, 1728, m. Elizabeth, d. Aug. 8, 1789; married Esther after Elizabeth died; mentioned as son David Green in David's will. -Marcy/Mercy/Margeret (Greene) Tillinghast b. March 8, 1730, d. abt 1759; mentioned in David's will as daughter Marcy Tillinghast. She married Charles Tillinghast. -Ebenezer Greene b. Jan. 10, 1731, d. before Sept. 9, 1754 -Patience (Greene) Brayton b. Nov. 7, 1733, m. Preserved Brayton, d. Jul. 30, 1794; mentioned in David's will as daughter Patience Green.
