Description	:	David Grove bears the names of his paternal great-grandfather and his grandfather. He was the 4th of 12 children born to Frederick Dent Messenger and Jane Marie Johnson. His siblings: John Ecard, Clark, Mary Adelia, Dennis Burris, Samuel Johnson, Royal Hastings, Virgil, twins Orlin and Rollin, Hyram and Martha Amelia. David spent his early years in Chester township, Knox County, Ohio till his father moved the family to Wayne Co., Iowa in the early 1850s. David spent his early years in Chester township, Knox County, Ohio till his father moved the family to Wayne Co., Iowa in the early 1850s. They lived on a large farm near New York in Union township, Wayne County. In Washington Co., Iowa, on 1 Aug 1861, David married Mary A. “Fay” Harvey, daughter of David Harvey and Katherine Fox.They had six children but only five have been identified in census records: Dennis J, John B, Catherine J, Estelle M and Charles Emanuel. For a time after they married, the couple lived in Union township, Wayne Co., Iowa. In 1870 they are living on a farm between David’s father and his brother, Royal. David’s father died in 1871 and by 1880, David had moved his family to Brighton, Washington Co., Iowa where they lived most of the rest of their lives. They also lived in Jefferson and Henry counties for short periods. David was still doing farm work and odd jobs into his 70s. He died in 1917 at 79. His wife died three years later.
