Description	:	Vergil was the 8th of 12 children born to Frederick Dent Messenger and Jane Marie Johnson. His siblings: John Ecard, Clark, Mary Adelia, David Grove, Dennis Burris, Samuel Johnson, Royal Hastings, Virgil, twins Orlin and Rollin, Hyrum and Martha. Vergil lived the first 5 years of his life in Ohio till his father moved the family to Wayne Co., Iowa in the early 1850s. Civil War Veteran: Vergil enlisted as a Private on 21 May 1864 in Company H, 46th Iowa Volunteer Regiment. Mustered out on 10 Jun 1864 and was discharged for illness after serving 100 days on 23 Sep 1864... A memory provided by a fellow soldier (found in the obituary books of the Wayne County Historical Society), mentions that Vergil was a very 'happy-go-lucky" boy, always ready for fun. He would (when unobserved by officers) step out of line and march in a comedic way to make his friends laugh in an effort to take their minds off how tired they were. Vergil was discharged from the Army very ill and he died shortly after reaching home. He was just shy of 19 years old. He is buried in a row with his father, three siblings [Samuel, Hyrum and Martha], and four cousins.
