Deceased was born in Bennington county, Vermont and resided there until he was nineteen years of age. Spending a few years in New York state he later moved to Illinois and from there he moved with his family to this county, near Millerton, and has made this county his home continuously for the past 28 years. When he was 23 years old he enlisted in the Union army and served until the close of the war with the 4th Ill. Cavalry. He took part in several large battles and it is also a fact that during his sacrifices in defence of his country he received a wound which was the direct cause of his death. Mr. Hastings was the father of seven children, four sons and three daughters, all the daughters having preceded him to his long home. He leaves surviving him a wife and L. S. Hastings, Jay Hastings, Albert and Herbert Hastings, all of this community. He was a kind father and husband and a good neighbor and always had an abiding faith in the Savior. The remains were interred in the Millerton cemetery. The funeral sermon was preached by Rev. Nate Harmon Monday morning. ``````````````````````` Peoples Banner (David City, Nebr.), April 19, 1906, p. 5, col. 7 DIED Henry Hastings died at his home in this city, Saturday, April 14, 1906. Deceased was born in Bennington county, Vermont, Sept. 6, 1841, being 64 years 7 months and 9 days old at the time of his death. At the age of 19 he went to the state of New York and two years later he went to Illinois where a year later he enlisted in the U.S. army, giving his best services to his country, serving to the close of the war. Twenty-eight years ago Mr. Hastings and family came to Nebraska locating on a farm near Millerton and continued to make this county their home ever since. Deceased accepted Christ as his saviour 23 years ago and continued an Abiding faith in Him, as his saviour until until his death. During his service in the army he received a wound from which he has been a painful sufferer for several years. He was a kind and affectionate husband, father and a respected citizen and leaves to mourn his departure a wife and four sons, L. S., Jay, Bert and Albert Hastings. Three daughters were born to Mr. and Mrs. Hastings, all of whom preceeded their father to the great beyond. Funeral services were held Monday at 10 a.m. at the Christian church, Rev. Nathan Harmon preaching the funeral sermon. The remains were laid to rest in the cemetery near Millerton. The Banner extends sympathy to the bereaved relatives. ______ We wish to express our heart-felt thanks to the G. A. R. and W. R.
