ELLA RILEY PASSED ON Former David City Woman Died Tuesday, Nov. 3 Mrs. Ella Riley, early-day resident of Butler county and a former resident of David City for a number of years, passed away at the home of her son, Jay Hastings, in Osceola, early Tuesday morning, Nov. 3, after illness of a couple of weeks. She was aged 85 years, 2 months and 26 days. Elenor Lytle was her maiden name. She was born in Illinois August 7, 1846, a daughter of John and Elizabeth Lytle. In 1865 she was united in marriage to David Henry Hastings. To them were born seven children, four sons and three daughters. One son and three daughters preceded their mother in death. The surviving sons are Judge L. S. Hastings of David City, Jay Hastings of Osceola and Albert A. Hastings of North Platte. There are also 18 grandchildren and 41 great-grandchildren surviving. Mr. and Mrs. Hastings came to Nebraska from Illinois in the summer of 1878, settling on a farm in Butler county where they lived for many years, enduring all the hardships of pioneer life. After leaving the farm they moved to David City where Mr. Hastings passed away. Some years later Mrs. Hastings was married to James Riley and lived in Silver Creek until his death several years ago when Mrs. Riley went to the Osceola to make her home with her son, Jay Hastings. Funeral services were held at 2 o'clock Thursday afternoon, Nov. 5, at the Methodist church in Osceola, conducted by the pastor, Rev. Collier. Burial was in Pleasant Hill cemetery, near Rising City. Judge Hastings and Mrs. Hastings, Mr. and Mrs. George Hopkins and Mrs. E. F. Thompson were in attendance at the funeral from David City. Mrs. Riley was a woman who greatly enjoyed life, always jolly and friendly, ever ready to help those in need and always enjoying visiting her many friends. She was a kind and loving wife and mother and made many sacrifices for those she loved, counting no task too strenuous to attain the welfare of her family and friends. She had been a faithful Christian all of her life and followed Christian teaching in daily living.
