Pilcher, aged 58 years and living on West Mechanic street, was almost instantly killed when he stepped in front of a Rock Island switch engine which was backing west near the Wapello street crossing. When found by bystanders Mr. Pilchers life was nearly extinct and he died within a few minutes. On examination it was found that his chest in the region of his heart was severely crushed, his right arm was nearly severed just below the elbow and he received a few bruises about the head. Mr. Pilcher lived until about two years ago on a farm south of the city just over the line in Davis county. Since coming here he has been employed in the Ottumwa Iron works in regular employment and for the past few months only as extra help. He had called at the plant Monday afternoon to see if he would be wanted for work this morning and had just stepped out of the rear door of the blacksmith shop on his way home when the accident happened. He is said to have stepped onto the track in the path of a Rock Island train coming east. Seeing the train, he stepped onto another track directly in the way of the switch engine which struck him and threw him off roadway. He is survived by his wife, Julia, two children, Havilla and Hattie. The funeral service will be held from the residence Wednesday afternoon at 2 oclock, conducted by the pastor of the United Brethren church. Interment will be made in the Shaul cemetery.
