Read More	CORONER SHAW IS DEAD Deceased Was the Oldest Mason in Washington David Henry Shaw, Sr., died at his home in Colfax, Sunday morning, July 12, 1903, at 7 o'clock, aged 77 years, four months and nine days. Funeral services were held at the Masonic Temple Monday afternoon, at 2 o'clock, under the auspices of Hiram Lodge No. 21, F.A A.M., and Washington Chapter No. 16, O. E. S., of which orders the deceased was an honored member. Judge S. J. Chadwick read an eulogy to the dead and spoke of his life and career as a citizen and a Mason. The deceased is survived by three sons, Wm. M. Shaw, David H. Shaw, Jr., and F. A. Shaw. A sister, Mrs. A. J. Loomie, resides at Mead, Wash.; a half sister, Mrs. S. E. Waldron, resides at Delaware, Ohio and a half brother, Hugh Alexander, lives In Oakesdale. There are also five grandchildren and a neice, Mrs. 0. H. Horton who are residents of Colfax. Mr. Shaw was one of the pioneers of Whitman county and was a man highly respected and loved by all. During his residence in Washington he held several offices of public trust and was coroner of Whitman county at the time of his death. He was the oldest Mason in point of membership, in the state of Washington, having been a member of that order for more than 50 years. David Henry Shaw, Sr., was born of English parents March 3,1826, at Philadelphia, Pa. He was left fatherless at the age of seven years and was soon called upon to assist in supporting his mother. Most of his boyhood days were spent in New York state. He acquired a good education through his own efforts. From New York he moved to Delaware, Ohio, and in 1846 enlisted at Columbus, Ohio, for the Mexican war and served throughout that conflict under Gen. Taylor and was mustered out at New Orleans. He had returned to Ohio when the news of the discovery of gold in California in 1849 again awakened his adventurous spirit. In company with a large party Mr. Shaw started overland for the gold fields. On February 16, 1850, he was married to Miss Mary Parker at Birmingham, lows. In 1854 Mr. and Mrs. Shaw emigrated to California, going by the water route via the isthmus of Nicaragua. Together with lowa relatives and friends he settled at the present site of Etna Mills, Cal,, where he engaged in mining, farming and stock raising and later in the hotel business. In the early days of that country Mr. Shaw was prominent in organizing many churches, Sunday and day schools. He gave his best efforts in building up towns. In 1879 he removed with his family to Washington territory and purchased a farm on the Palouse river near the present site of Glenwood station. Here they resided for a number of years, later moving to Colfax, where he became the proprietor of the Baldwin hotel. Mrs. Shaw died June 1, 1902. Mr. Shaw be came a member of the Church of the Good Samaritan in this city, which membership he held until the time of his death. He was one of the most prominent Masons in this country, having held a number of offices in that organization during his long membership.
