Shaw was born in Scott Valley, California, November 29, 1857, where she lived until the fall of 1876, when the family moved to Santa Rosa, Cal., and remained three years. Irwin, which occurred at their home on Clear Creek, Feb. 7th: Mary J. Shaw was born in Scott Valley, California, November 29, 1857, where she lived until the fall of 1876, when the family moved to Santa Rosa, Cal., and remained three years. From this place in 1879 they came to Colfax, Washington territory, and Mary became a student in the Colfax Academy, but was soon chosen as a teacher in the same institution. After severing her connection with the academy as teacher she taught some time in public school in neighboring districts. Her love for children made her an excellent leader of the young heart, while her superior qualities of mind well fitted her for the field of intellectual activity and instruction so constantly demanded of a teacher in both public and private schools. In June 1883 she was married to Henry S. Irwin, her now bereaved husband. July 3, 1886 brought to the young household a little child. Soon afterward Mrs. Irwin became an invalid, and was almost constant but ever patient sufferer. Throughout her life she took an active interest in the welfare of the poor or distressed ones, and this characteristic made her well and favorably known. By her associates she was dearly loved. Besides her husband and the little boy there remains relatives in this territory a father, mother and three brothers, two of whom are married. Also the family of Rev. A.J. Loomis are relatives, Mrs. Loomis being an aunt of the deceased. Mrs. Irwin passed from this life on the morning of the 7th day of February, 1888. The Commonor, Colfax, W.T. Friday February 17, 1888 ===== Came to Whitman County in 1879 Married Henry S. Irwin in June 1883 Son was born July 3, 1886 Survived by her husband and son, her parents, and 3 married brothers. She was also survived by her aunt, Mrs. A.J. Loomis, wife of Reverand Loomis.
