Read More	The Hagerstown (IN) Exponent, Thursday, August 5, 1909 DEATH OF DAVID HOLDER David Holder, a well-known and highly esteemed resident of this section, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. D. O. Dilling, Wednesday night, July 28, near eleven o'clock, after an illness of seven weeks of paralysis. Mr. Holder received the most devoted attention from his daughters, Mrs. D. O. Dilling and Mrs. Will Stout, and nothing that could be done for their father's comfort and for his restoration to health was left undone, but despite all efforts he grew gradually worse until the end came which was a sweet refreshing sleep after days of ceaseless suffering. The funeral services were held Saturday morning at 10:30 o'clock, at the Brick church, west of town, by Elder Lewis Teeter, assisted by Elder J. W. Bowman. Elder Teeter based his remarks upon the language found in Rev. 22:14. The church choir led in singing the following songs, the first two being especial favorites of the deceased: 'Farewell, Vain World,' 'Dear Friend, Farewell,' 'Sometime We'll Surely Know,' 'Passing Through the Gate,' and 'Tenderly Lay Him to Rest.' Miss Letha Bowman, with others accompanying, sang, 'Nearer, My God, To Thee.' The pallbearers were Messrs. William Werking, David Werking, Frank Bowers, Solomon Bowman, John Hoover and Elder Levi Dilling. The remains of Mr.Holder were placed to rest by the side of his wife in the church cemetery. Those in attendance from a distance were Henry Holder and Luther Thornburg, of Farmland; Mrs. Thomas Wilkinson, a niece of Farmland; Judge Elliott and wife, the latter a niece, of Marion; Levi Holder and son, of Anderson. Mrs. Clara Ulrich, a granddaughter, of Wenatchee, Wash. was unable to be present. Mrs. Ulrich was as an own daughter of Mr. Holder, she having been a member of his household from her earliest years until married a few years since. The following obituary was read at the funeral services: OBITUARY David, son of Henry and Elizabeth Pinkley Holder, was born April 17, 1832, in Bedford County, Pa., and died July 28, 1909, at the home of his son in law one-half mile west of Hagerstown, Indiana, at the age of 77 years, 3 months and 11 days. At about the age of 17, he, with his family, moved to Iowa, and about four years later, he, with his sister, Susan, came to his home with old uncle John Werking, two miles west of Hagerstown. Afterwards he hired to Lewis Kinsey, where he made his home until his marriage to Elizabeth Hoover, in 1854. To this union were born two children, namely: Levi Holder, of Anderson, Indiana; the other died in infancy. In 1856 his wife died. On the 27th of November, 1857, he was married to Christina Ulrich with whom he lived until her death, January 18, 1908. To this union were born two children, namely, Mrs. William Stout and Mrs. D. O. Dilling, both living on farms adjoining the old Holder homestead. And their father, being in feeble health, he lived alternately in their homes since, and until his death. In the year 1855, he joined the Church of the Brethren and continued faithful to the end. For about 34 years, he, with his last companion, lived nearest this church edifice--in which his body now lies in state, and many, from far away and near, attending services here shared their kind hospitalities from time to time. when his last companion was taken away, being now aged, was scarcely able to bear up under the pressure of that bereavement, and being in failing health, and also experiencing a slight stroke of paralysis four or five months ago, he called for and received the holy anointing of James 5:14 resulting in much comfort to him, and likely gave him still more spiritual power to endure his affliction with Christian patience. He leaves, besides his three children already mentioned, three brothers, namely, George, of Hampton, Iowa; Henry, of Farmland, Indiana; and Elder Joseph Holder, of Hagerstown, Indiana; and one sister, Mary Gowen, of Toledo, Washington; eight grand and twelve great-grandchildren. Farewell, dear father, but not forever-- There will be a glorious dawn. We shall meet,--to part?--no, never, On the Resurrection Morn. Tho' thy dear form shall lie sleeping, In the cold and silent tomb. Thou shalt have a glorious waking, When the blessed Lord doth come."
