Description	:	David Lee Birch, 27, a Cleghorn resident, died suddenly Friday morning, July 26, 1974. Following an autopsy, officials ruled that he was apparently struck by lightning while working with his father on the farm. Stanley Birch, David's father, reported that he found his son slumped down beside a wagon load of soybeans. He tried to administer mouth to mouth resuscitation before the young man was taken to Sioux Valley Memorial Hospital in Cherokee where he was pronounced dead on arrival. David Birch farmed in the Cleghorn community for one year; prior to that he taught and coached in the Odebolt-Arthur Community Schools for three years. He was a 1965 graduate of the the Meriden-Cleghorn Community School and received his dsegree from Westmar College in Le Mars in 1969. David was an outstanding athlete in football, basketball and track during high school and college. He also was active as a referee the past year. He was a S-Sgt. in the 185th Tactical Fighter Group, Air Nationa Guard, based at Sergeant Bluff. He was a member of the Cleghorn Presbyterian Church. David is buried in Oak Hill Cemetery in Cherokee. A scholarship fund was established at Meriden-Cleghorn Community School in memory of David Lee Birch.
