Services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at Cleghorn Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Patricia Cox officiating. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery, Cherokee, Iowa. Stanley was born Aug. 7, 1911, on a farm south of Marcus, Iowa, to William and Olive (Pooley) Birch. They later purchased a farm south of Cleghorn. He received his entire schooling in the Cleghorn school, graduating in 1932. He was married to Margaret Nielsen on Nov. 28, 1935, in Alta, Iowa, by the Rev. John Bloomquist. He was a farmer and cattle feeder all his life. He was a lifetime member of Cleghorn Presbyterian Church. He was baptized on Oct. 15, 1920 and joined the church as a youth, where he later served as a trustee, elder and treasurer. He loved flea markets and antique cars. He never lost his love of farming, working until he was 90 years old. In 1975, after an anhydrous accident, he was given orders to leave the cold winters of Iowa, so he became a "Texas Snowbird." For 28 years the couple wintered in Alamo, Texas. He is survived by his wife, Margaret; a daughter and a son, Margie Hansen of Fairfax, Iowa, and LaVerne (Nancy) Birch of Cleghorn; a daughter-in-law, Janine Reidesel of Paton, Iowa; nine grandchildren, Michael (Mary) Hansen, Brad (Terrie) Hansen, Debbie Hansen and Joel (Jenny) Hansen, all of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Karen Busch and Brenda (Jim) Schuster, all of Fairfax, Iowa, Chris (Lisa) Hansen of Walford, Iowa, Lisa (Eric) Johnson of Cleghorn and Melanie Rose of Omaha; 15 great-grandchildren, Michael John and Matthew Hansen, Tara Hansen, Jacob and Joshua Hansen, all of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Andrea and Elizabeth Busch, Melissa, Colby and Jarrad Stepanek, all of Fairfax, Iowa, Sawyer and Riley Hansen of Walford, Iowa, Allison, Caitlan and Madison Johnson of Cleghorn; three sisters, Bernice Johnson of Phoenix, Ariz., Vera (Gerald) Wood of Storm Lake, Iowa, and Audrey Curry of Chico, Calif.; a sister-in-law, Barbara Birch of Phoenix, Ariz.; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, David a victim of lightning in 1974; three sisters, Pearl McKennen, Lois Hazen and Alta Wilcox; and a brother, Milo Birch. The family requests that memorials be made to the Cleghorn Presbyterian Church.
