According to Lee County authorities, Hammel and three companions went fishing about 1 p.m. Wednesady in the vicinity of Jabawocky Lane. The four were fishing from the bank on the Iowa side, after failing to catch any fish, the men decided to go swimming. Hammel had waded about three-quarters of the way across the river, his fiends said, when he suddenly disappeared from sight. He surfaced several seconds later a short distance downstream, and yelled for help. He then disappeared under water again and did not resurface. His friends then went to a nearby home and called the South Lee County sheriff's office. The three men who went fishing with Hammel are Rodney Mason, 29, of 1505 Missouri Ave.; Dougles Sherrill, 17, of 410 S. Fourth St.; and Ricky Lee Hammel, 22, of Cramer Lane. Hammel was a cousin of David Hammel. Taken from the Daily Gate City Newspaper clipping. David Lee Hammel, 25, of 306 Concert St. died about 3:45 p.m. Wednesday while swimming in the Des Moines River. Mr. Hammel's body was recovered Thursday afternoon a short distance from where he was last seen by three friends, who went swimming with him. He was near the Missouri shore, across from Jabberwocky Lane, when he drowned. He was born July 25, 1952, in Keokuk and was a lifelong Keokuk resident. He worked at the Seabold Animal Farm. Mr. Hammel is survived by his wife of one month, the former Violet B. Davis. The couple was married July 4. He is also survived by his father, Luther Hammel of Keokuk; his mother, Mrs. Betty Louise Kelley of Warwick, Md.; a sister, Mrs. Jack (Cleva Lee) Percival of Argyle; and a half-brother, Ronny Kaneer of Emmetsburg. He is also survived by three half-sister, Mrs. Linda Myers of Keokuk, Linda Stevens of Alexandria, Mo, and Cynthia Haley of Warwick, Md.; three grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Louis Kaneer of Butterfield, Minn, and Mrs. Anna Kaneer of Argyle; and aunts and uncles. The funeral will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday Aug. 6, 1977 at the DeJong Funeral Home, with Rev. R. Terry Halstead officiating. Interment will be in Oakland Cemetery
