Description	:	David was born in the settlement of Kildonan on the Peninsula of Kintyre in Argyllshire, Scotland, the son of Nathaniel and Margaret (Galbraith) McNair. His father was a farmer, one of several generations of McNair crofters who had relocated from the Scottish Lowland to Kintyre in the early 1600's. in 1821, David left Scotland for New Brunswick, Canada, with his parents and eight siblings. His father was a farmer, one of several generations of McNair crofters who had relocated from the Scottish Lowland to Kintyre in the early 1600's. in 1821, David left Scotland for New Brunswick, Canada, with his parents and eight siblings. The family landed at the settlement of Mirimichi, a shipping port on the Mirimichi River in Northumberland County where lumber from the vast Canadian forests was loaded on ships returning to Scotland. The family then traveled to Northern New Brunswick, where they settled near New Mills, a sparsely populated settlement on the Chaleur Bay. David married Janet Ferguson on April 18, 1837, in Addington Parish, Gloucester County, New Brunswick. The couple settled in Colborne Parish in Restigouche County, where they raised their family and remained until their deaths. David was a farmer, and it is unclear whether he owned or rented his farm: no record of a land grant has been found. Ten children were added to their family at their home in Colborne Parish: Jean, in 1838; Nathaniel in 1839; John, in 1840; Ebenezer, in 1842; Archibald, in 1843; David Nathaniel, in 1844; James, in 1846; Alexander, in 1848; William F., in 1852; and Archibald, in 1854. All of David and Janet's children emigrated from Canada to the United States. Nathaniel, John and James were in Plumas and Sierra County, California, by 1867, where they worked in the lumbering business. Ebenezer, a carpenter by trade, was in Multnomah County, Oregon, by 1870, and British Columbia by 1881, where he died in 1901. Alexander arrived in the United States by 1867, settled in Wisconsin by 1881, and remained there until 1888, when he moved with his wife and two daughters to Tillamook, Tillamook County, Oregon. William followed his older brothers to Sierra County, California, in 1874, where he married and raised four children. He and his wife, Mary, are buried in Morgan Hill, California. By 1882, Archibald had settled at Myrtle Point, Oregon, where he and his wife, Martha, raised their family of seven children. Archibald was not only a successful farmer, but a hardware merchant who owned and operated the McNair Hardware Company. And Jean, David and Janet's only daughter, moved in 1888 with her husband, George White, to San Luis Obispo County, California, where she remained until her death in 1924. Unlike many of the McNair branches, David and Janet did not follow their children to their new homes in the United States. Both remained in Durham Parish until their deaths, and are buried in the village in which they originally settled near the beautiful Chaleur Bay.
