Sheets, one of the few remaining veterans of the Civil War in Ransom county and interment with military rites was made in Oakwwod cemetery at Lisbon. Rev. Elmer E. Duden of the local Methodist church officiated.. A large concourse of friends packed the church to do honor to the memory of a real patriot, a man of sterling character, a devoted father and husband and a neighbor beloved by all.. preceding the services in the church the casket was gently borne by pallbearers composed of members of the local American Legion post between the ranks of a firing squad from the Service company, 164th Infantry standing at present arms while the post colors of the Legion were dipped in reverence.. Rev. Duden preached a sermon teeming with comfort for the bereaved ones and extolling the virtues of the valiant one who had gone to his reward. Special music was furnished by a trio from the American legion auxiliary composed of Mmes. Warren Dodds, M.S. Holliston and J.E. Jones, with mrs. H.S. Maddsen as accompanist. They sang "Rock of Ages", "Take It to the Lord in Prayer" and "The Old Rugged Cross".. At the cemetery, after the commitment services by Rev. Duden, the accustomed three volleys were fired over the grave by the firing squad commanded by Sergeant Albin Saxlund and composed of Oscar Thomason, Carl kirmis, Clellan Yackley and Douglas Crites and taps were sounded by Sergeant Alfred Thomason of the 164th Infantry band. Following taps, Colonal J. W. Carroll, department commander of the G.A.R., carried out the brief ritualistic rites of that organization. This an honored soldier was lovingly laid to rest.. Honorary pallbearers were Colonel Carroll, A.G. Humphrey, N.C. Anderson, Wm. Morgan, J. T. Peterson and W. P. Keenan, while active pallbearers were M. D. Murray, R.W. Klingbell, Earl Barber, Guy Hopewell and Wm. M. Jones.. David Sentman Sheets, one of the last of Ransom county's G.A.R. veterans, passed away Thursday evening at the Parmeter home in Lisbon, where he had been a patient the past month, death being caused by old age and complications due to a fall received recently.. He was born on July 20, 1848, at Gettysburg, Pa. At the age of one and one-half years he moved with his parents to Milledgeville, Ill., where he grew to young manhood. At the age of 16 years, during the last year of the Civil war, he enlisted with Company G., 142nd regiment, Illinois infantry, where he served 90 days and was honorably disharged.. After the close of the Civil war, with an older brother he immigrated by covered wagon to Haridan county, Iowa.. He was also engaged for a number of years in the livery business at Belmond, Ia. Having sold out, he engaged in farming at Clarion, Ia., until the winter of 1903 when he emigrated to North Dakota, settling on a farm ten miles west of Lisbon, where he continued to farm until retiring in 1919, when he moved to Englevale, where he has since resided. . On December 13, 1868 he united in marriage to Priscilla Hiserodt, who passed away May 17, 1882. To this union were born four children, of whom three survive him, one son, Harry C. Sheets, passing away in June 1926.. The surviving children are: Wm. P. Sheets, of George, Ia., Mrs. Carrie Billings of Seattle, Wash., and Mrs. Jessie Towney of Minneapolis, Minn.. On March 28, 1895, he was united in marriage to Susann Elizabeth Sheets of Bradford, Ohio, who is left to mourn his departure and, also three daughters born to this union: Mrs. Ruth Weber of Verona, Mrs. Ferne Allgood of Verona and Mrs. Ina Allgood of Englevale. There are also 21 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.. . He leaves one sister, Mrs. Cleo Powell of Rockford, Ill., one sister, Mrs. Matilda Bouton of Minneapolis, Minn., preceded him in death on September 12, 1936, at the age of 92 years..
