David Smith was born April 10, 1824, in Union Township. Early in life he was consecrated to God in holy baptism, administered by Rev. John Wagenhals. He was confirmed at the age of 21 under the pastorate of Rev. D. Rothacker. He was one of a family of 12 children, 5 whom preceded him in death. He spent his whole life in the Peter Smith, Sr., home, hence was well known in Union Township, and indeed over a great portion of the county. He had been sick for many years, having been a great charge on the family during the last year of his life. He was taken from his bed of suffering July 18, 1900, at the age of 76 years, 3 months and 8 days. There are left his two brothers, Hiram and Samuel, and two sisters, Elizabeth and Lucinda, in the old home, and two sisters, Mrs. Mary Simmons and Mrs. Lavinia Saltsgiver, who had married, besides these there is a large circle of relatives and friends. The funeral is held this (Friday morning.) His obituary in the Carroll Free Press, Carrollton, Ohio, Wednesday, July 25, 1900. David Smith, of Union Township died at the old homestead on Wednesday, July 18th--aged 76 years. Deceased had been ill for over a year, the most of the time confined to his bed. He was an honorable and upright man, respected by all. Two brothers and four sisters to mourn his loss. Was interred in St. John's cemetery Friday morning, Rev. W. E. Arnholt conducting the services.
