Miss Mary Smith was born in Pennsylvania; was consecrated to God in the Holy Sacrament of Baptism in infancy. When she had reached near four years of age, her father brought his family to Ohio and settled on the farm known as the Smith Farm, where two brothers and two sisters yet reside. At the age of 14 she joined the Ev. Luth. Church by the rite of confirmation. She married Mr. Adam Simmons, who has been dead for a number of years. Though destined to be childless, she raised wholly or in part seven children, having made her home with one of these, Mrs. Cassidy, for the last three or four years. She was sick less than three weeks, when the summons came to her. She died February 22, 1901, at the ripe age of 80 years, 6 months and 24 days. On the following Sunday she was laid to rest in the cemetery adjoining the St. John's Lutheran Church, of which congregation she was a life long member. Two brothers and three sisters remain, Hiram, Samuel, Betsy, Lucinda and Mrs. Lavinia Saltsgiver, besides her adopted family. May God comfort the mourning ones and grant her ashes a peaceful rest, till His day come. Her obituary in the Carroll Chronicle, Carrollton, Ohio, Friday, March 1, 1901. (In the Union Twp. news section) Aunt Polly Simmons of Union Township died Thursday at the home of Matthew Cassidy, her adopted son-in-law. She had been in poor health for the past two years and had a stroke of paralysis recently which was the cause of her death. She had no children of her own be had raised several, among whom were Mrs. Sue Henderson, John Calvy, John Penn, Mrs. Matthew Cassidy, Cass McIntyre and Mrs. Grant Gregory. Deceased was aged about 80 years. Interment at Slates' on Sunday Rev. Arnholt officiating. Her obituary also in the Carroll Chronicle, Friday, March 1, 1901. Mary Smith was born in Centre County, Pennsylvania, July 28, 1820. Before reaching her fourth birthday anniversary the Smith family "went west," settling on the Smith farm in this county, when four members of the family yet reside. She was baptized in infancy; at 14 years of age confirmed; at about 24 years of age she married Andrew Simmons, who preceded her in death several years age. Her whole life was spent practically on the farm where she died. She had no family, but raised or partly raised seven children. Of the large family but five remain, two brothers, having died during the last year. Hiram, Sammy, Betsy and Lucinda Smith and Mrs. L. Saltsgiver of the family remain. Mrs. Simmons died February 23, 1901, aged 80 years, 6 months and 24 days. She was a life long member of St. John's Lutheran Church and was laid to rest in the cemetery adjoining the church. Her pastor, W. E. Arnholt, officiated.
