Carmel The whole town was shocked when word was given that Mrs. Dawn Purdum Utes, 34, and a native of Cherokee had died during childbirth at 2 a.m. Wednesday morning at Mt. Carmel hospital. Dawn was one of Cherokee's finest young women, a person with many talents. A great favorite of the Sentinel family from her early girlhood days. Years ago she helped her father, the late Arthur Purdum, when he was assisting us print the election ballots. We have been pals ever since and she taught her little girls to call us "Mr. Harry" and we shall miss her as we would one of our family. She graduated from the Crawford Community high school in 1934, after which she attended the Chillicothe, Mo., Business College, and lived in Chicago 10 years before moving back here with her husband two years ago. She was married to Harry O. Utes in 1944. She was a member of the Methodist church. Surviving besides her husband are three daughters, Betsy Jo Utes, five, Judt Bee, three, and Linda Sue, born Wednesday night; her mother, Mrs. Maude Purdum of Cherokee; one sister, Mrs. Bee Glasser of Chicago; three brothers, J. Arthur Purdum, W. Dale Purdum and Jack Dyke Purdum, all of Cherokee. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. this (Friday) at the Presbyterian church with Rev. G.M. Pierce officiating. The body will remain at the Ellsworth chapel until noon, when it will be taken to the church. Burial will be in the Cherokee cemetery.
