Kunkel, 79, of Le Mars, Iowa, passed away Thursday, June 13, 2013, at Park Place Estates in Le Mars. Walker Nickless will be principal celebrant of the Mass, along with other priests of the Diocese of Sioux City. Burial will follow at St. Catherine's Cemetery in Oyens, Iowa. Visitation will begin at 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, June 16, 2013, at St. James Catholic Church. The family will be present from 4 to 5:30 and also 6:30 to 8. A rosary service will take place at 4:30 p.m., with a Scriptural prayer service scheduled at 7:00 p.m. There will also be a Knights of Columbus rosary service after the Scriptural prayer service, followed by a KofC 4th degree presentation of a chalice. There will also be one hour of visitation at the church prior to Mass on Monday. Donald M. Kunkel was born on February 2, 1934, on the family farm near Oyens, Iowa, the son of Andrew and Rose (Ruppert) Kunkel. Donald graduated from St. Catherine's grade school in 1948 and St. Joseph's High School in 1952. He also attended Westmar College in Le Mars for two years, studying accounting and business. He operated Don's Bookkeeping for several years. Donald was ordained a permanent Deacon on April 11, 1981. Donald thoroughly enjoyed his many years of service as a Deacon. He was a fifty-year honorary life member of Trinity Council Knights of Columbus #1466 and an honorary life member of Michael J. McGivney Assembly #3088. He enjoyed retirement, playing cards, his weekly Bible group, and cooking. He will be lovingly remembered by his two sisters, Jean (Ralph) Niehus of Le Mars and Rosemary (Ralph) Thorpe of Lincoln, Nebraska; a brother-in-law, Bob Cronin, of Oyens; and several nieces, nephews, and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; infant brother, Andrew Jr.; sisters, Norma Dietrich, Delores Kunkel, and Paula Cronin; brother, Larry Kunkel; brother-in-law, Norman Dietrich; and sister-in-law, Charlene Kunkel.
