Roller Mill, Bud was acquitted of all chargers in July 1900 Highland Recorder February 9, 1900 MILL BURNED The mill, near Williamsville in Bath county, known as the Bob Wallace mill, was on last Saturday night burned to the ground, the fire it is supposed having started from a bad flue. The property on which this mill was located had just come into the possession of Mr. M.M. Morrison, he having traded his Ewing Dever farm to Mr. Bud Neil, its former owner, for the mill property. Highland Recorder February 23, 1900 INDICTED FOR BURNING MILL At the Bath county court last Week Delilah Michael and S.M. Neil were indicted on the charge of turning the Williamsville Roller Mill, an account of which appeared in this paper two weeks ago. Under a warrant the parties were arrested, at their home in this county, by J. Ed. Arbogast, Sheriff and special deputy William Jordan and were brought to Monterey where they were guarded at Hotel Star Friday night and on Saturday were taken to the Bath county seat, where they were turned over to Sheriff John H Gum. Bail, it is thought, will be granted the prisoners by the Judge in vacation. They have secured as their attorneys Stephenson and Jones. Highland Recorder March 16, 1900 Bud Neil and his mother who are charged with the burning of the Williamsville mill, and have been in jail in Bath county since the indictment was made against them, have been admitted to bail in the penalty of $1,000 each. L.H Stephenson one of the attorneys for the defendants, returned Tuesday from the Springs and informs us that the case will come up in May. Highland Recorder June 15, 1900 The Bud Neil case was continued on account of the absence of an important witness. Highland Recorder July 13, 1900 Attorneys L.H. Stephenson, C.P. Jones & E.H. McClintic are attending Bath county court this week. The Bud Neil burning mill case is being tried. Highland Recorder July 27, 1900 THE BUD NEIL CASE The trial of "Bud" Neil, who with his mother, was charged with burning the Williamsville Roller Mill, was concluded in Bath county court late last week, resulting in the acquittal of the accused. It was a big case the largest that Bath has had for years and twelve days were taken up in its trial. Public sentiment ran high against Neil and any evidence of positive character, as to his guilt would have gone for its fullest weight against him, but positive evidence was lacking. The case on the side of the defense was skillfully handled by attorneys Charles P. Jones, L.H. Stephenson, J.W. Stephenson and George H. Revercomb. Highland Recorder August 10, 1900 Suit for damages has been brought in the Circuit Court of Highland county by S.M. "Bud" Neil, against M.M. Morrison and Dr. A. Mack Byrd. They being the prosecuting witnesses in the mill burning case recently concluded in Bath county against Neil. Highland Recorder April 5, 1901 All the cases in the courts of Bath county, growing out of the burning of the Neil mill, near Williamsville, have been compromised and will be dismissed. There are a couple of damage cases in Highland circuit court that have to do with the affair, yet on the docket. Richmond Dispatch July 22, 1900 The longest term, of the Bath County Court that has ever been held, ended on Thursday. The term began on Tuesday, July 10th, and practically the whole time was occupied in the trial of S. M. Neil, charged with being accessory to the burning of a merchant mill near Williamsville in this county. The facts as developed on the trial were that Neil had furnished this mill with new machinery, on which there was an insurance of $1,500. After completing the mill he exchanged this property for another, in Highland county. There was a lien on the property in favor of the parties furnishing the machinery and the insurance was for the benefit of these parties. Under the contract of exchange, Neil was bound to pay off this lien. Neil, it was alleged, formed a purpose of burning the mill so that the insurance would discharge the debt due to the parties from whom he purchased the machinery. Witnesses were introduced to show frequent inquiries made by Mr. Neil as to whose loss it would be if the mill, was burned after he had delivered possession, and before the deeds of exchange passed. There was testimony introduced designed to show that he had induced his mother Delilah Michael, an old woman of about ,70, to actually set fire to the mill, while he stayed away to enable him to prove an alibi. There was testimony that several days before the fire she came to the mill and remained there, and that on the night of the fire the miller seems to have been drugged. The Williamsville community was deeply stirred by the matter. There, were in all , over one hundred witnesses summoned. Every point was vigorously fought, but strange, to say the case,after this lengthy trial was submitted without argument. The Jury, after, quite a lengthy consultation, found a verdict of not guilty. Highland Recorder March 28, 1902 The attorneys in the Morrison-Neil case are taking deposition. Mr. Ervine Gum, the popular Sheriff of Bath county is one of the witnesses and many friends were glad to see him. This case will probably be heard at the May term of Circuit Court.
