Description	:	Delma Cordelia Nelson, a Gainesville musician and music educator, died Friday at Oak Hammock at the University of Florida. She was 87. Mrs. Nelson was born in Gainesville and was an alumna of UF and a longtime piano teacher. In a teaching career that spanned almost 50 years, she taught piano to many students at her home near the Thomas Center. She advocated music performance and education and was actively involved in the Foundation for the Promotion of Music. Read More	Delma Cordelia Nelson, a Gainesville musician and music educator, died Friday at Oak Hammock at the University of Florida. She was 87. Mrs. Nelson was born in Gainesville and was an alumna of UF and a longtime piano teacher. In a teaching career that spanned almost 50 years, she taught piano to many students at her home near the Thomas Center. She advocated music performance and education and was actively involved in the Foundation for the Promotion of Music. In 1993, she was honored by the group as Gainesville’s “Musician of the Year.” Mrs. Nelson served for many years as music chairwoman for the annual Spring Pilgrimage tour of historic homes in northeast Gainesville. She arranged for musicians, from vocalists to string quartets, to perform in the homes on the tour. She was past president of the Foundation for the Promotion of Music, president of the Suwannee River District of the Florida Federation of Music Clubs, state music chairwoman for the Florida Federation of Women’s Clubs, a member of the Gainesville Music Teachers Association and of the Thomas Center Associates. She was an active, lifetime member of the First Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Otis M. Nelson. Survivors include her brother, Samuel Lee Crouch of Fort Myers; a sister, Madge Williams of Oriental, N.C.; sons, James O. Nelson of Miami, Ronald C. Nelson of Dallas, Michael Bruce Nelson of Corsicana, Texas, and Gary Nelson of Miami; a daughter, Diana Kay Smith of Atlanta; 11 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandson.
