She died at Gardenside Nursing Home in Fairbury, Nebraska on July 13, 2014 at the age of 88 years, 4 months, and 6 days. She died at Gardenside Nursing Home in Fairbury, Nebraska on July 13, 2014 at the age of 88 years, 4 months, and 6 days. We will miss our wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and our kind, compassionate, loving, tolerant, and forever eager-to-learn teacher and friend. She was baptized in Zion Lutheran near Tobias March 28, 1926 and was confirmed on June 25, 1939 at Immanuel Lutheran near Daykin. She lived with her parents, brothers, and sister on farms near Tobias, Daykin, and Fairbury and graduated from Fairbury H.S. in 1944. She married Bernard E. Bartels at Immanuel Lutheran on May 30, 1948. They lived and worked on a grain and dairy farm north of Tobias for 63 years. Deloras and Bernard moved to Cedarwood Assisted Living in April, 2011 because of her battle with Alzheimer's. In her youth Deloras helped raise her six younger siblings. Later, she taught in rural schools in Jefferson County, Nebraska until she married Bernard. She did all the normal chores that a wife does on a farm and she and Bernard helped their children play an important role in the operation of the family farm. Deloras never stopped teaching. Her children, grandchildren, and students all assumed that everyone got flash cards and math workbooks for Christmas and birthdays. And, doesn't everyone know how to "cast out nines" when doing arithmetic? Wanting her children to experience other parts of the country, Deloras planned many family trips and outings. She and Bernard continued to travel as long as their health permitted. Extended family was very important to Deloras and she spent countless hours researching and compiling family histories for her relatives. She and Bernard started and led 4-H clubs for her children and their friends. After the children left home she continued, helping numerous children in the Tobias, Western, and Daykin area. She was involved in 4-H for over 30 years. Deloras was a member of Zion Lutheran church for 66 years. She was a member of the Ladies' Aide, Women's Missionary League, and choir; a charter member of the Happy Homemakers Extension club and was active for more than 50 years; a member of the Tobias American Legion Auxiliary and served as its president for numerous years. During the 70's she started a 28-year career as a Title One teacher for Zion Lutheran and Meridian Public schools. She was a member of the Red Hat Society and bowled for many years and in 2001 and 2002 was second in the USBC National Senior Women's Championship tournament. Deloras is preceded in death by her parents, by her brother Rolland Schwisow and by her son-in-law William Hermes. She is survived by her beloved husband of 66 years, Bernard E. Bartels and their children: Keith and wife Mary (Bye) Bartels, Jean Bartels and husband Steve Armburster, Dennis and wife Janet (Vavra); eight grandchildren: Tobias Bartels & Crystal, Jessica Bartels & Chinedom Ikwuakor, Sean Hermes & Susan, Brent Hermes & Tiffany, Alicia Armburster, Claire Armburster, Tamara & Jeremy Mostek, Jonathan Vavra-Fong & April; seven great-grandchildren: Ava Bartels, Evelyn and Harriet Hermes, Dylan and Mason Mostek, Devin Searcy and Ayden Vavra-Fong; sister: Janile Roesler, brothers: Virgil and wife Joanne Schwisow, Elroy Schwisow, Roger Schwisow, and Leslie Schwisow; sisters-in-law: Berniece Pfingsten and Lorna Bartels; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. Funeral services will be 1:00 p.m. Thursday, July 17, 2014 at Zion Lutheran Church rural Tobias , Nebraska with Pastor Ryan Meyer officiating. Interment will be in the Zion Lutheran Church Cemetery.
